You know, I've thought of that, but I suspect that the body has reinforcing to allow that, which I suppose could be added. I see the things at the scrap yards fairly often. Last time I asked I think I got a price of about 250-300 USD. The turbo diesel 81 I'm working on has one, and it is a little rough. The truck is in paint right now and I will see how well they do with it. If necessary I might swap out one in better condition.Sweet piece!
Now if we could just import some of those OEM rear tire carriers...
I will add that the OEM tire rack is really, really good. It clicks into place, is very, very sturdy, and even has a locking pin to keep it swung out if the truck is at an angle. The 81 even has a switch that detects whether it is fully closed and locked. Really well-engineered.
I lust after barn doors, which I saw at the scrap yard a couple of weeks back, but again, the modifications to use them would be pretty extensive. I will see if I can find a photo of those.
