In my area there are many instances of 35x12.5x17 tires mounted on later model Toyota OEM wheels(tacoma, fourunner, FJ cruiser, etc) for sale on FB Marketplace. I guess some of the young bucks get a bit optimistic on fitting 35s on their IFS trucks.... I know these wheels are typically have more positive offset and less backspacing than the OEM 80 wheels. I'm curious for THOSE RUNNING THEM or who have in the past, how do they work, and if they rub, where? I can guess just as well as the next guy so looking for actual experience :).

I run 4Runner steelies on my 80. I added 1" spacers to clear the rear sway bar mount and minimize rubbing in the rear (primarily driver side) under full compression. Note, my 80 is a 1994, so the rear sway bar mount is a sort of vertical strap bolted to the outside of the frame rail. The newer models have a sway bar mount under the frame rail, so it may have more clearance. Also, I have a 3" lift and didn't have panhard correction when I added the rims, that may have contributed to rubbing (the rear axle offset to the passenger side by the uncorrected lift).

I’m running Tacoma/Sequoia 5-spoke 17” wheels.
I installed a 35x11.5 tire, not a 12.5”.

I utilized the Slee Spydertrax spacers, 1.5” I believe. Those wheels, with those spacers brought my 11.5” tires right back to factory spec width.
No rubbing & super happy now after several years.

Great info, thanks! I actually have a set of those same wheels left over from my first gen tundra. Awesome looking rig!

Really happy with the look.
Original 16” wheels were a 5-spoke design, so it kept it similar without being obnoxious.
I don’t care for the look of aftermarket wheels. Not to mention they are probably inferior in metallurgy & engineering to OEM.

Sorry to burst your bubble but OEM wheels are usually made by another manufacturer in another factory. Those manufacturers also make "aftermarket wheels" for other brands.

There is no magic potion at the Toyota factory but yes their QA/QC is probably what helps drives their success rate.
