Introducing the Mountain Passes Transmission Cooler. This replaces the OEM cooler but is 3 times larger at 11"x9.5". This is a plate and fin cooler from Hayden Fluid Coolers. The cooler is under $50 on Amazon. It is a quality Plate and Fin cooler, similar to OEM. NOT a poorer quality tube and fin design. Comes with hoses and clamps. I will provide a welded frame that fits in the OEM rubber isolators just like the factory transmission cooler. This is very important for vibration resistance and durability. I also provide wires to relocate the horns and instructions. I used to see 220F+ empty on Colorado passes. I now haven't gone above 201F towing 4000lbs. Huge improvement. Frame Kit is $150 + shipping. You buy cooler on Amazon. GX470 at this time.

Standing by for the install video/ writeup on this if it is as simple as you say I will be buying. Just for the peace of mind.

I shot the video Saturday. Including taking a ton of time to shot video I was done in 3 hours. Had I not shot video it would have taken perhaps 1.5 hours. Now I need to edit the video into one video.

How can you install this and not have an issue with air in the line? I guess I can't understand how this can be installed and not also have the need to bleed the system?

Why would you have issues with air in the system? Eventually itll bleed out on move to the highest point in the transmission and not be an issue. Its not like the coolant system which will have issues if air is present.

You are right I am thinking like cooling system...

Are you needing to add any extra ATF due to the bigger size of the cooler? I would be doing a drain/refill when I do this mod anyways but just curious.

@co4wheel I'm very interested in this kit too. I'm going to be towing up and down a pretty decent mountain a lot soon (about 2000 feet in only 3 miles).

This popular thread at TW brings up two points I wanted to ask about since I know almost nothing about these things:

1. The importance of cold performance. He really touts the TruCool brand, but I saw that Hayden also has a "cold bypass" line.

67x series - "regular"
69x series - cold bypass

I don't live in a cold climate, but we do have a real winter here.

Do you, or anyone else, recommend the cold bypass models? Thoughts on TruCool?

2. Getting a cooler that is much larger than OEM decreases airflow to the radiator. How big is too big?

Not worried about "over cooling" the Trans so much as decreasing airflow to the radiator. Especially as seems to be common wisdom around here that the VVT-i engines run hot(ter).

Thanks!

Edit: The Hayden video for their cold-bypass series seems to me like it would really need to be mounted with the entrance/exit tubes facing up for the bypass system to work.

But again, I'm no engineer - and fluid dynamics gets crazy o_O

I've been wondering if anyone on here has upgraded or replaced the factory electric fan for the AC to provide more airflow through the radiator at idle. I know that would increase current draw but when its hot out and the AC on, I've measured an under hood temp over 200°F. Obviously a large electric fan would help lower these and probably help the AC work better (not that it needs to be better the majority of the time)

This thread is a little older but are you still selling this kit?

I have run this cooler kit for a few years and I like it. I picked it up from Steve(I think that's his name) along with a rear platform, at his house in CO Springs, super nice guy. The install is surprisingly finicky but the frame and cooler fit perfect. I was able to modify the trim piece to retain it because OCD. I dont have any empirical data on controlling temps but I trust that it does because bigger is more good'r. Gives me piece of mind when driving harder than I should over mountain passes loaded down with a RTT.
