Thats what im thinking!!!!DO IT! BMW is known for reliable, simple to diagnose and fix engines, with no special tools needed. Plus parts are easily found at most local / trail side auto parts stores. NO brainier!
IF you ditch the Auto trans for a manual, swap in a powerful engine, rev it up and dump the clutch....then yes you can probably 'chirp all four tires' (once anyway).
Hope you have deep pockets and a pioneering spirit if you go the BMW route though. It wouldn't be my first (2nd, 3rd......) pick though.
ive got to say, this was good. Its fun to let your imagination run, but after hearing the inputs from other owners and coming back to the world where i dont have a fully equipped mechanic shop, or unlimited funds or corporate sponsorships.BMW's M60/62 engines have proven to be quite reliable provided you keep up maintenance. Timing chain guides and such.
As someone said, it gets its power via RPM, not low-end torque, so proper-spec FI will be a necessity if you want that.
Coming from the BMW world, this swap has crossed my mind a few times, but the work needed to get it to work would be world-conquering.
Right? Why are you guys so hatery? It's not like any of you are better off with mall crawlers
That sounds bonkers. Did any of the electrical doodads work after you did that? Those are complex machines...I wouldn't remove a running Toyota motor to do it.
The only experience I have with that 4.4 motor was ripping it out of a 7 series BMW and putting a 6.0 LS in its place. There's my .02.
Kinda sorta. Lol. It was a friend's car. Eventually made a custom gauge cluster. Every "system" in those cars have their own like, ECU or control module. Kinda convenient. That sounds bonkers. Did any of the electrical doodads work after you did that? Those are complex machines...

shop and a decent Mexican restaurant.
There is one, but not the one in the mall. Probably not as good as it would be south of the Red River, but it is south of the St. Louis River. There are NO decent Mexican restaurants anywhere North of the Red River, but I suppose it's all relative.![]()
Its funny about bmw’s, i got the money to buy this project because i bought a 98 m3 from some kid who was told by a “European car repair shop” that it needed a new head gasket. It ran and drove but over heated and was clean inside, 130k but had auto trans. Scooped it for 1200$ spent 15 lazy hours( i have a job) rebuilding and inspecting cooling system by passed the heater core and that was it.... no more over heat and all sensors responding proper ,300$ on misc parts and fluids. Sold it for 6k in 45 days after buying it. Soooooo misdiagnosed by a “pro” but i fixed it from youtube vids.... if you are not afraid to do the work the world is your oyster!!Doug DeMuro likes his Rovers, so not sure how much we should trust his opinion, but he indicates you should never own a BMW that is out of warranty. I'd say go ahead once you have the warranty secured.
