I've seen some conversations touching on this topic in the past but don't recall which side the majority of the opinions fell - if any.

Given similar use and maintenance, which engine has the edge for longevity, the 6 or the 8? What tips the scale? Does the the 4.7 have a corresponding failure prone item like the 4.5 HG?

I'm the original owner of a 95 with factory lockers, cloth interior and 3rd row seats and presently at 116k miles. Since it has been in S Cal for the last 6 years (1st 4 in Chicago) rust has yet to show, except for my trailer hitch.

I'd like to keep it going for as long as possible if for no other reason than the fact that what its worth wouldn't buy anything as substantial. Having said that, every time I get a little flush, I get a hankering for the V8 100!

Since 80K+ of my miles were on the highway and the fluids were regularly changed, I'm hoping for 200K+, maybe push 300K.

The 1FZE has not been out long enough to show any reliability problems. It's only been 12 years. :)

Mannnnn , that answer has SNAP !! ;)

There are not many 1FZ FE that have over 300k yet, so who knows, but with the inline 6 you never have to change (or worry) about a timing belt, that's one big plus for the 6! :) I did hear of possible piston slap or somethin' like that (been a while), on the first V8's in the Tundra

My close friend has a 1996 L/C with 325,000 miles!! Original Tranny and Engine meaning no overhaul yet. I was amazed at how much it can go without any major maintenence. My 92 has 143k and I bet it has lots of life left.

There's one guy on the 100 forum who has a 99 LX470 w/ 197K mi and just had the original timing belt changed (pics are posted). I guess one advantage of the 2UZ is, you can get a third party HG (designed to take lots of boost) for it.

For hard core proof of reliability of the 1FZ, look at the ones TOYOTA Material Handling Company ("TMHC") has put in forklifts. That’s where you can find monster #s of hours and use on these motors! (Same goes for the good’ol 2F’s)
