Finally got some seat time in the truck. I spent some time tightening all of the bolts on the chassis (links, steering, shocks) and it wanders a BIT less than before.

It was 25 deg (celcius) today and the truck sat at 210-215 all day. Lots of gear noise from the axles at higher speeds, especially when decellerating. Lot's of flying mud due to exposed tires. Only the outside of the tailgate was still clean when we were done.

Any action shots? :D

What is next as far as repairs, upgrades?
Lights are next. Followed by tire coverage. Followed by passenger bench install (so my 2 little boys can go for a ride - I've got a mini bench to fit in the cab in place of the existing seat)

Good stuff , I have to stop by someday and take a look , I still see the green machine in the neighbor's driveway. Do you have any more parts for sale sinse the last time I was there ?

loud gear noise on decel usually point to bad backlash set on the gears or ring and pinion

Finally got the truck cleaned out from the last go. Took the seats out and sprayed inside. The cage makes it tougher for sure

I put the hard top and soft doors on, hoping it would keep the interior a little cleaner

Then I decided to give it another go in the mud
truck11.webp

Putting the roof and doors on was the stupidest decision I made. Shoulda just taken the windshield off. I couldn't see a thing and the inside got fricken dirty anyway
truck12.webp

Oh, and the lockers don't work. So I made a much bigger mess than I would have to if the diffs locked!! Guess that is next on the list

The steering is pretty sloppy. Time to figure out what is wrong with that front axle. Still runs nice, but you can feel the floppiness in the steering.

Pulled the tires off.
faxle1.webp

Supported the frame on some lumber and jack stands and the front axle is supported separately

Pulled the calipers off (2 bolts a piece) and tied them out of the way (haven't disconnected any brake lines)
faxle3.webp

Disconnected the relay rod and tie rod
faxle4.webp

Split the drive joint so I could keep the weight down for the portal and not have to move it with the axle. Is just 4 bolts

Pulled the portal off (pass. side). Here you can see it on the ground. I'll have to weigh it but it must be about 100lb (without the callipers, kingpin bushings and steering arm.
faxle6.webp

Here are the various parts. bushings on bottom left, steering arm, the axle still in the housing, and CV centre on the floor
faxle7.webp

The kingpin bushings as they came out (bottom on left and top on right)

I cleaned up the bushings and checked the wear/fit on the portal. They fit nice and tight
faxle9.webp
faxle10.webp

Checked the fit in the axle C. You can also see the axle bushing and housing seal. Both look pretty good. The seal has a metal outer gaurd that is bent but not bad. The bottom kingpin (in the C) has a very small amount of "wiggle" Think I'm going to leave it in there

Here you can see the axle shaft size
faxle12.webp

And here is the axle half of the CV. It's all tight and great shape EXCEPT the rubber seal sticking out. It looks like grease in the pic, but it's actually the rubber sticking out. So the cup won't fit back on properly until I fix it.

hope ya don't mind I used one of your pictures as a desktop image. I have a 64 Landcruiser FJ45 SWB that Unimog axles were installed into to make a rock crawler. PO ran it for awhile and said his wife didn't care for it as it was too tall. haha So the guy took the truck apart and I bought the remaining parts. Frame, tub, front sheet metal and whats left of the bed. He bobbed that. I just started trying to put it back together as an everyday driver. I think its going to take some time as PO mofified a lot of stuff and I'm trying to figure out what he had done.
Anyway love the look of the truck.

Not original, But sure is bitchin :D:beer:

Removed the driver's side axle tube
faxle17.webp

This freed up the locking collar. Here you can see it all put together. The teeth on the right (at the bottom of the spring), engage with the teeth in the differential (first pic)
faxle18.webp

Here are all of the parts apart. The spring, dog teeth collar, thrust washer, sliding sleeve, and the 2 air o-rings
