Modified M416 Overlanding trailer w/ telescoping platform + Roof top tent (RTT) + awning
Great way to ease your family into camping + overlanding
Purchased FEB2018 from an overlander in LA who purchased the M416 trailer stock. The previous owner then added/built the telescoping platform and created this for overlanding w/ his family.
When we purchased it we were just beginning to get into overlanding and needed something light and a place to keep all our gear so we could leave for trips quickly. We didn't want an RTT permanently on our vehicle. Also wanted the ability to haul material if needed as a standard utility trailer. It’s performed beautifully and we’re now progressing to a flatbed camper unit.
The roof top tent platform has a gas strut powered lift which allows you to extend the platform when you’ve made camp to get the full height of the annex. Works amazingly well, then you lower the platform when you’re ready to go so it’s much easier to tow.
We sleep 2 in the RTT and then 1-2 in the annex on cots w/ our dog.
We wanted an M416 size trailer due to weight and be easy to tow:
We can move it by hand w/ one person (it weighs about 700lbs) and is super easy to tow, tracks perfectly behind our 80 & 40 series. Due to size this also does not need a license plate, just one time registration.
Under our ownership we’ve added: (all work done by Classic Restorations in Concord CA)
Replaced all 4 struts
installed tailgate
change pintle hitch to 3-axis
install 2" receiver on the rear to attach a bike rack
Line-X the tub
Change to 4pin wiring harness for lights
Replaced 2 original brake lights w/ LED Lights (this is the entire unit, not just the bulb)
Replaced original tires w/ Goodyear 32 11 ½ R 15 (we still have the spare w/ original wheel + tire on it)
Comes with:
Ironman roof top tent + annex + awning : Roof top tent is in outstanding condition, clean, no mildew, smells clean.
2” Receiver tongue mount which is adjustable to your rig’s ride height (everything you need to plug into your 2” receiver hitch)
1 spare w/ original m416 tire
Original brakelights (if you want to remount them for OEM look)
Handbrake works great
FAQ:
- are you willing to separate the RTT + awning?
No
- weight: 500lbs + 150lbs for RTT + telescoping frame = 650lbs dry. I can move this by myself on a flat surface.
- the telescoping platform: how is this powered?
struts in each pole. Each pole has self retracting pins. You just have to pull the pins and the rack goes up. 1 person can raise the platform as you only need to press very lightly to get the struts to do all the work. Once is up, the pins go into the holes for the up position and lock the rack in that position. To get the platform down, you need TWO people or and just hang on the platform to lower it until the auto locking pins click.
- will it fit in my standard garage?
yes, w/ the platform lowered
- what did you do wrt to toilet?
we purchased a flushable portable toilet w/ personal tent which worked great.
