This is correct, 68’s were a first in many respects, 1st year padded dash and knee pad, seat belts….front bib reflectors. One of the things I haven’t been able to track down is when they started to install emission air pumps. Most of the early 68’s, no air pump, but in the parts manual, and as early as 68, air pump and manifold.

My early 68 had the 2 groove press on harmonic balancer and the port in the air cleaner for the air pump…. But no air pump.

Anyone have an answer here? Was it just a California thing, or was it just Toyota getting ready for the future emission changes.
@Mark Jennings mine has the air injector rail (plugged) but no air pump. I don't know if it was there and removed, or if it was never there.

The 1981 title I have from it (Wyoming) indicates that the previous title was Oregon and lists a factory cost of $3050! Maybe that means it was purchased new in Oregon, maybe it means it has had more owners than I thought it did and Oregon was simply the one immediately prior to Wyoming.

Either way, I plan to remove the air injection rail and plug the holes. Without the pump it's less than useless, right?

There are quite a few vendors here on Mud that sell the plugs for the air injection rail/manifold. I would be curious to know if indeed, yours originally sold in Oregon or in California. Some of the parts book don’t show an air pump before 73…..mine was originally from New Mexico and there was no indication of air injection ever being installed.

My 68 was originally owned by the NM Lea County Sheriff. And from what we can gather, he bought it new in Santa Fe. We bought it in 1992 from one of his deputies. The deputy got it from the Sheriff’s estate sale. The Sheriff made some goofy mods that were common in the 70’s that made it more usable for hunting. I corrected most (keep it safe to drive) and others I deleted when we restored the old girl in 2018….plus, I added my own updates, AC, disk brakes and overdrive being the most notable. It’s still a 3 on the tree, with the vacuum 4WD engagement and under-dash high/low range lever.

But anyway, congrats on the acquisition, like I said, my wife and I have had ours since 1992….I still enjoy working on it and keeping it clean. She still uses it around town for errands and when I feel brave, I drive it the 70 mile round trip to work. It’s a lovable beast of a rig…..and I hope you enjoy yours for years to come.
