Mod New Blue Hub Fan Clutch?

I'll be working on a supercharged 80 series with the ring fan shortly due to the owner complaining of continuous running hot on hot days (100 deg ambient) and higher elevation cruising. His scangauge is reporting temps hovering around 210 and higher.

It looks like I'll need to drain and refill with 20,000 CST and get a 3FE fan. Anything else?

He lives in NM as well.

Thanks.

I just replaced my AC compressor, drier, and expansion block; plus did a MAJOR tune up including cooling system flush, ALL hoses, thermostat, etc.

The AC is not up to par for me (good on the highway, mediocre in town. I am in NC and it has been very hot here lately. The clutch works as intended (roar at startup, etc). I have the Eaton clutch and was going to switch to the 10000cst fluid.

This should suffice, correct? We are relocating to IN from NC this fall. It will be a bit cooler there, plus a "real" winter. The thicker fluid should not have any adverse effects in the cooler whether, correct?

Thanks,
Robert

So I have a 97 cruiser here in Vegas with 100k miles. I've replaced all the hoses and done the flush. So far the AC works great, no issues. We are getting ready to do a full tune up, including a new blue hub fan clutch. Should I just start out with the oil it comes with and see how things work before bumping up to a heavier oil? Being in Vegas, and seeing how it is 113 out, good AC and cooling performance is at the top of my list!

Did my fan clutch last night. With the SC, I had to remove the battery and battery tray, drain radiator, disconnect hoses at the top of the radiator, and remove fan shroud to get the fan/fan clutch out.... just so you know what you are getting into.

If it's running continuously hot I'd be looking at the radiator as well.

Howdy! Just a quick word of warning. The 3FE fan sit nearly 1/2" closer to the fan clutch, so if you have fabbed up a custom wrench to fit on the S/C tensioner pulley, it will not fit any more. I had to do a lot more cut/grind to make mine fit. Can be done, but it took me a while to figure out why it was easy to remove the S/C belt, but no way was it going back on!! John

Same symptoms as azlc77 - rodded out rad fixed it

Same AC cutoff problem with 97 in PHX and now Tucson. Towing anything AC would cut off going up any hill. Replaced Thermostat, Recharged AC, and replaced fan clutch with no improvement. Did fan clutch myself before consulting mud forum (ok big mistake - threw away old black clutch that was probably fine). So after none of that worked took it back to shop where this started and they found "cool" spots on the radiator with a scan gun. No radiator in stock in town so local shop rodded it out and that fixed it. Tested coolant temp and runs 185-194 in various scenarios.

Only had it cut off once since and that was pulling boat up hill out of Roosevelt (8%) on 100+ day.

Sounds like you are setting up to own this Lexus a while. Living in PHX I would consider a new radiator to improve cooling efficiency in addition to a strong fan clutch. Based on my experience of running with a less than optimal radiator for years.

FWIW - I still get a roar at start up with new clutch so I assume it working good if not optimal.

For Tools and LandTank, Is a boat up Roosevelt hill in 100+ just too much to stay cool or if I mod my clutch would it stay cool?

At what speed does the fan not matter? I always thought about 35 mph. So if your running hot at highway speeds, I would look at other parts of the system.

It matters all the time. Just less the faster you go. Even at freeway speeds (65+ MPH) the fan can make a 10* difference in temps.

If it were me, I would calibrate the fan and put in the 10k fluid from the start. There have been enough blue fan clutches that hacvent worked well out of box,why not spend 30 minutes at the outset and have it right?

Good point.

Just ordered 10K CST. Looking forward to better around town and idle temps.

I went with 10k and roughly 45-50mL. I have had two 80's and replaced the fan clutch on both of them. This is the first time I have ever heard my fan. Current 80 has the Toyota Blue, replaced last year, never heard or had evidence of it actually working. Now it does. Should have done it the first time.

After discovering that the PO had the original clutch replaced with the Hayden unit. I ordered a blue hub and some OFNA 10000 cst fluid. It will be a fun weekend project.

Anyone want a used Hayden for cheap. It works just fine. I am just being ultra anal after replacing every cooling part in the Cruiser except for the water pump and radiator.

In my experience the '80 is fan dependent. Depending on load, temp, etc, it can require fan assist at any speed.
