Mobil 1 - true synthetic or not???

Slight hijack, but it seems like this thread could use it ;)...

Hey Cary,

Is there any truth to the rumor (I'll dig up the post from another forum where I saw it, if necessary) that folks with pushrod engines need to start being very careful with their choice of oil, due to some certain additive being phased out of most brands?

Does that ring any bells? I know I'm being pretty vague; I'll see if I can find that post...

Curtis

I believe there was some speculation about this, but there is no evidence I am aware of to support it. If there is, someone better alert GM and Chrysler that they need to spec special oils for the millions of pushrod engines they sell each year.

It does appear, that most pushrod engines, like many engines like a 40 weight oil for the lowest wear.

Exactly why I switched to this oil.

The only problem with it is inside my head because I can't leave it in the crankcase longer than 3,000 miles....

Shaman,

Since you seem to be a guy who prefers science to hearsay, here's some seemingly scientifically based commentary for you, courtesy of RavenTai's above hyperlinks:
---------------
"Engine wear actually decreases as oil ages. This has also been substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119. What this means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than the people who let their engine's oil get some age on it."

"
Based on the results we've got here, we'd recommend 8,000 miles between oil changes on an engine that uses no oil at all, perhaps 10,000 miles on an engine that uses some oil, and 15,000 miles or beyond with a filter change every 5,000 miles. This, of course, isn't any kind of guarantee, and you must evaluate for yourself what your engine requires. One thing we're pretty sure about though: 3,000-mile intervals is a huge waste of resources."

I am also using 0W-40, with the OEM large filter.
On a tangential bent, I'm curious how your oil pressure (or that of any other M1 0W-40 users) is faring during the higher temps of summer. My needle dips to midway between the lower two hash marks at ~700 rpm with an OAT of > 80*F. What are you seeing at comparable ambient temps?

Has anyone here hooked up a calibrated oil pressure gauge to quantify the hash marks on the stock oil pressure gauge?

Mobil 1 - true synthetic or not???

Who the 7734 cares what it’s made of? More importantly, why would it matter? It has proven to be a well matched oil for the 1FZ, delivering very low wear numbers in oil tests.

Very well...I suppose this means you wouldn't consider adding a bypass filter and foregoing oil changes altogether? ;p

How's your oil pressure reading w/ 0W-40?

Toilet paper is for wiping you ass, not filtering oil. :flipoff2::flipoff2:

Yes, I really do believe that, I am not a believer in bypass filters.

Oil pressure is find with the 0w-40, slightly higher than with a 30 weight, slightly lower than it would be with a heavy 40 weight.

Mine reads just fine. At a hot idle it's at the low hash and when the RPM is brought up it moves right up the scale. I have fitted a mechanical gauge. SOme day I will do that to see what the hot idle pressure is.

If I were on the engineering team that designed the Mobil 1 line, I'd be laughing my a$$ off reading this post of oil arguements...and I'd have the formula's in my hand, hehe.

BTW, I use German Castrol 0w30 :)

I suddenly feel better about changing my oil every 6k....

Hey Guys, sorry for dredging up an old thread :deadhorse: but I really should have posted my original concerns in this thread instead of here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/61621-mobil-1-synthetic-gear-oil-center-diff.html

Note: Thank you Tools R Us for alerting me of this (I'm still a bit of a noob obviously)

Anyway, I think everyone involved in the recent posts have made some very valid points, so if you feel like reminiscing on this old topic, here you go.
