Hey- im not a baller. My southwest points covered my flight. I just got lucky and know some good people. A buddy of mine offered to ship it free if I could meet his driver in Denver late that evening. My wife insisted I take that offer so I wouldn't be going cross country solo. The boss set the bar.

All three times I’ve been were in August.
Weather was pleasant (though periods of rain on any given day are normal)and I never ran into horrible mosquitoes—despite camping anywhere between Valdez and the Arctic Ocean at Prudho Bay.

I grew up in Alaska. My suggestion as far as timing would be June when daylight rules, the weather is nice by Alaska standards and pretty much everything is open for business, but up through August would be OK. I didn't off-road back in those days so where we'd go for trails etc... we'd have to find a local to help out, or Markuson? Kenai peninsula is just awesome between Homer and Seward, and of course Denali. It's a BIG state so you can't do it all. Reality is that it's not a couple day trip. Need no less than a week on the ground there and more is better. The beauty there is unbelievable.

McKinley - you only see the mountain about 1/3 of the time up there... it creates it's own weather. This was the middle of June and when we got into the park it was 55-60 degrees. While we were in the park heading to the mountain, we ran into a blizzard that dropped 5" of snow, and it was all melted on the way back out. Mid June.

Kind of a typical view no matter where you are... (not exactly true, but almost)
