misssing on more than one cylinder?

Just for the sake of doing it. Put the truck on TDC and check where your rotor is pointing. If you were slightly off on the timing would cause it. Just eliminating as I go through it. I have had trucks come to me running. Do a tune up,valves, and wires, and have it run light crap. Then check the timing and realize they had it timed wrong.

or it left running great but timing seemed set high... only to find out dizzy was stabbed wrong by P.O. at some point in time:rolleyes:

I went ahead and re installed the dist and even read the angle with the angle finder. its right where the FSM says it should be. still no luck. I re checked the compression yet again and its still 140 on all 6 cylinders. I even by passed the BVSV's and still no luck. anyone have anymore ideas? Im starting to get frustrated.

wait till dark then start and run the engine(still in the dark). you will be able to see if you are loosing spark. if there are cracks in the (new) plug wires, or a leak around the coil you will see it.
hope this helps,
eric

s***, I am stumped. I like the idea of looking in the dark. Also, if I was working this, I would pull numbers 5 and 6 plugs and check gap, see if they are fouled, and then swap them with one or two of the plugs from the good cylinders. Or stick a couple of the old plugs in. If this did nothing, I would be back to vacuum. If you still have the old distributor cap, swap it back in and see what changes, if anything. At this point, I would start undoing the work I did. Swap in wires from before, etc.

Also, to answer your question about bad head gaskets, if there is not water in the oil and you have good compression, you are okay as far as my experience goes.

Iv had all the plugs out and swaped. I am getting spark at ALL 6 plugs. 5 and 6 are firing but they seem to be WAY out of time. Im thinking dirstributer but dont want to spend all the money if it wount help.

The brake booster vacuum port/source is at the back of the intake. If the brake booster leaks or vacuum line leaks, it only affects cylinders 5 & 6.

I went ahead and checked for vacuum leaks at the brake booster and I am good there. On a side note the intake manifold bolts where a little loose. I tightened those up but wasnt able to get the carb back on before I had to run. Ill get it all put back together tomorrow and see what happens. FWIW I put the old cap and wires back on and the same thing. I also noticed that if I put my timing light on the number 6 wire I can see the 7 BTDC mark at the pointer. Is this nomal?

did you figure out your issue?

I have taken some time off as I was getting a little frustrated and didnt want to do anything stupid. Spent time today doing a few other things. Wont have time to get back to the motor until early next week. I am going re check for vacuum leaks and have a few other ideas. Ill post up when I get back to it.

the problem could be the dizzy its self.... they do go bad... rare but it does happen.... Just saying maybe have it looked at...

new discovery. I think I have tested and replaced all the parts I can and decided to pull the head even though the compression tests had gone fine. While getting ready to pull the manifold I found a huge crack. The obvious thought was this is my problem, the only thing is that it is on the cylinder 1 and 2 portion of the intake manifold. Is it still possible that this is my issue?
