I’ll Try an document this somewhat but there is a YouTube on it as well.. (not mine)

After stupidly backing up and hitting the garage door track with my mirror I need to repair it.

Repair kit: 87946-60R30 right side
Purchased from my local dealer with a pretty good online discount. $172.55 before tax.

It includes:
The aluminum frame and motor,
Side seal, wiring harness and new connector, 3 screws, pin out guide, and a new bottom cover

Looks like a PITA job in case your wondering…

Here’s how I did it:

It's not as tough as. you might think. Pretty straight forward R&R. Here's one of my old videos on replacing the power folding mirror mechanism:

-

The hard part is not damaging any of the plastic clips on the plastic mirror shell.
Ive seen people make the mistake of tryign to pry the back cover of the mirror off. Take a look at the video above around the 5:00 mark. There's a few screws to undo first, then there's a few clips inside the housing that can easily be wiggled loose to remove the back cover. Just take your time and don't rush.

rgr.. we'll its documented enough so I'm not going to bother unless anyone needs something specific.. both of those threads are helpful as well as the video
Thank you

Its on my list to do right after I finish up my VCT valves on the 5.4 3v Ford...

Be aware the part number pictured above is not the correct one for the 2017+ with blind spot monitoring..
it has the wrong harness and is missing 2 wires in the loom..
which sucks…now BSM and RCTA are non-functional..

It’s in for now at least the mirror works as it’s suppose to…
Looks like a full mirror replacement is in my future… or clearviews…
But more likely I’ll strip out the wires from the old harness and transfer them over this fall.. if it annoys me.

That does suck. Sorry man. Ih8wires.

Yep... PITA..

Good news is that I have the harness repaired now.. and so I get to do it all over again to add in the missing wires...
In retrospect I should have de-pinned the original connector and reused it..
its a bit more complicated than just adding in 2 wires unfortunately since you need to trace the all of them and replace about 8 since they are combining some power and ground wires. The signal wires are separate thankfully...
anyway it will add about 4 hours to this repair overall if you do it at the same time.

Not sure now exactly what the right part number is for the retractor kit with the correct harness is however since multiple ones come up as "Correct" fitment.

have anyone looked at replacing just the motor assembly without the whole harness? for example I am looking at this part: Right Electric Power Mirror Folding Motor For Toyota LandCruiser L200 Prado L150 | eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/395471552828 , will replacing this part rather than re-pinning the harness work? any thoughts?
I also see gear wheels and pins being sold for lc200 mirror, not sure how easy or difficult it is to open up the motor and replace the gear wheels. but for the $50 , if I am getting the whole motor, I am inclined to replace the motor rather than repinning the harness.

You will have to De-Pin the connector to get the Harness out of the Motor since it goes through it..
No way around it..

Update…
The supplied harness is missing one signal wire for the BSM (which is also tied to the CTAS rear cross traffic system btw).. I pull that wire from the old harness and fed it through to the door connector, then rewires the 4 pin plug for the blind spot monitoring system and reassembled.
Everything works as designed again.

But just get the right part number for the retractor repair kit :) and don’t do what I had to do.

I have successfully repinned the existing harness and replaced just the motor (which I bought from ebay).
The trick was to push the pins back out at an angle so the pin (metal piece) starts coming out, once its out considerable bit, I used pliers to pull each pin out.
After replacing the motor, putting the pins exactly back in the same place was helpful so I dont need to worry about what new color codes go where in the new harness.
See some pics on how I did my 2011 lx.

these are the tweezers which worked for me, I used to back up the pin from its spot.
I tried a lot of other tools but this did the job easily and predictably.
ESD-11 model tweezers.
I took mine apart today just to take a first hand look inside.

I did a few things:

1) Checked if the electronics board that’s inside the black plastic housing puts out voltage to the motor. It did put out 12v.

2) I tried directly actuating the motor that’s inside the black plastic housing with 12v from a power supply and the motor folded the mirror but used about 4 amps and the motor started smoking after a few seconds.

So… I think the issue is the little motor itself.

Has anyone tried swapping just the little motor inside? Swapping the motor doesn’t require messing with the harness. Heck you don’t even need to remove the door panel nor remove the mirror from the car to swap just the little motor.

Yes, you can swap just the motor and I have tried it as well. In fact I have an extra motor with Me if you want.
Some key considerations:
1. The biggest hurdle in this job is that the plastic tabs on the motor housing will break very easily and if those are broken, even if you replace the motor, it may not sit tight and snug back again. I tried doing zip ties to keep the housing black in place and it does the job but I don’t know if it can withstand long term.

2. For this job you do need to remove the mirror assembly from door panel and disassemble the mirror housing quite a bit to get the motor housing free. The only this you wouldn’t need to do is depinning and repinning the harness. (Which is the most time consuming and frustrating part of the job).

There are a lot of YouTube videos which show you motor swap on Toyota folding mirrors and it’s very similar.

I followed these instructions for my 2017 LX 570 yesterday! Worked out well, thank you @NKP Garage. My local shop quoted $500 labor for this repair... Nice to have saved that much!
You got it, glad it was helpful! Love to heart that you got it working on your own!
