Looking for expertise on sand - media blasting.

Subject will be my 71 40 frame, axles, and tub and body parts.

Couple questions::hhmm:

1. Will a pressure pot sand blaster be strong enough for the task. I have a 6hp twin cylinder air compressor.

2. Will the sand work on the hard parts (frame/axle), and the body parts. Or will I need to use some other type of media on the thin gauge sheet metal?

Basically I am on a very limited budget. The cruiser is completely dismantled. Should I buy this whopping deal? :meh:

Sandblaster - used 1 time!

That should work fine for a 40 frame. Don't expect miracles.
I would think twice about doing the sheet metal though with sand.
Maybe get a piece of useless body and use it as a test subject to see what the sand will do.

I wouldn't use sand on the body as you will probably warp it. I wouldn't use sand at all as silcosis (sp%) sand getting into your lungs and causing some major heath problem. I used coal slag and it goes by a number of names mainly black beauty. I found that you can pick it up at Tractor Supply for like $8 a 50lb bag. Make sure you get the fine as the larger will clog a smaller pot blaster and leaves a nicer finish. I used about 20 bags to do my FJ45 frame, axles, bumper and I didn't recycle it although you can.

6hp comressor will probably work but it depends on CFM, psi and air tank size. I had a 7hp direct drive compressor and 60gallon tank. It gave the compressor quite the work out. It take a while and is a dirty job. Since I probably will be doing more in the future I purchased a supplied air set up rather than using catrage filter mask. I has some pictures in my signature of my frame after blasting if you are interested.

Hope this helps.

I've done just enough blasting to know that there's no way I'd consider doing all that myself. It makes a HUGE mess, plus you really need the proper safety gear to protect yourself. You may even burn up your compressor. Do what I did last summer: pay someone else that has a booth to do it. I paid about $300 to have my entire frame done (18' long), and it was a bargain as far as I'm concerned.

@KLF, where did you get your blasting done at? That's a nice deal

Yeah, I hate blasting. It a boring, filthy job. Where in Southern NH did you get it done?

Jason, how much did that supplied air setup cost you? Where did you get the tank, and how much do they cost to get filled?

I took it to Specialty Stripping, on Rt 1 in North Hampton NH. Really nice woman owns the place, she did a great job. When I get them ready, I'm gonna drop off my bumpers and BudBuilt crossmember. I have a small Craftsman blaster, but I hate using it, make a huge mess.

It is boring and filthy. I think I paid around $400 for it but I wanted it for painting too. No tank so no cost to get anything filled. You just have to put the pump in an area where its away from the fumes/dust ect. It wasn't cheap but better than needing new lungs

Here it is Breathecool II Supplied Air Respirator System w/fullface mask

My problem now is that neigborhood cats think the area I was blasting is a giant litter box. Time to get out the BB gun :hillbilly:
