I just got back from four days of camping wheeling in Harlan, Ky and think I might need to go with heavy OMEs in the rear instead of the mediums. I never bottomed out but the ride was very spongey.

Do the heavy springs ride rough when not loaded? Here's some pics of it loaded and what was in it. The tent was the base camp for our group.

Holy tamale! That's not camping, that's homesteading. Looks comfy - cozy though.

In my experience (ie: my truck only), yes they do ride rough.

That said, I am on 285/75/16 MTR's, heavies in the rear, with 1 OME packer on each side, no 2nd or 3rd row seats, no interior plastic panels and an Kaymar OEM rear tire carrier with a MTR spare.

As a data point, my truck sits much higher in the rear than in the front.

Someone correct if I'm wrong but i believe there is no difference in the spring rate of the Medium vs Heavy Old Man Emu Spring.

The only difference is something like 20mm in height.

If that is all infact true, i doubt you would see any difference in the ride quality and why not just through in a packer or two in the rear, perhaps some 1" MAF coil spacers if you feel you would need that much.

OME Heavys were harsh and "buckboardish" until I got my rear bumper on. That weight smoothed things out.

This is what I took from Romers excellent multi-page thread on this exact topic.

Is it all just a placebo effect? The heavy's feel harsher because we expect them to be?

I'll trade you my heavies for your portals....:grinpimp:

The heavies are supposed to be the same rate, just longer.

Brandon, i think you are correct. Medium's and heavy's both have the same spring rate. Heavies just sit a tad higher so when loaded they are equal to a medium, supposidly.

No but I have the Rancho 9000s.

I have the 63s. Rides just fine even lightly loaded and sure handles being loaded very well. Glad I got them.

The "heavy" 864 springs do indeed have a significantly heavier rate. They are not well suited to an unloaded vehicle but one that has a big rear bumper/tire carrier and always packs at least a couple hundred extra pounds of gear or extra fuel will find them very attractive. I really like mine. OME states that they are good for 40 mm lift over stock with an additional 880 lbs cargo over stock. My testing indicates that to be the case.

An "unloaded" 864 sits about as high as an "unloaded" 863J. As you load the vehicle the 864 will drop about 1/2 as fast as the 963J at any given additional load. IE whatever you add to the vehicle to drop an 864 one inch the same load will drop an 863(J) two inches.

For the front that's true. The rears are 860's, 220 lbf/in and the 863's, 250 lbf/in.

This is what I needed, now anyone have heavies that want mediums?
