I have a pristine 1988 toyota RV with a 1985 2-lt motor with 80k. It has just developed a cracked head. I have no garage so would have to work outside and don't have tools to remove crank, cam pulleys etc. I also have never prepped valve guides etc to go into bare head. I live in northeast pa and don't know anybody that works on these. The RV drives and is not overheating? yet, but I have significant blow by. I am here looking for any resources. I know that this isn't an ideal motor for this but the unit is like one of the best examples anywhere and I hate to see this be the end. Thanks

Two suggestions.

1. Post this as well in the diesel forum. Diesel Tech / 24 volts - https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/diesel-tech-24-volts.24/

2. Post this in the PA clubhouse. PA- Keystone Cruisers - https://forum.ih8mud.com/forums/pa-keystone-cruisers.77/

Oh, and where are my manners. Welcome to our slice of MUD. :flipoff2: <- official MUD welcome.

Keystone is here.
And I am one of the diesel guys in the club, but not close enough to assist.

I don't believe you will have to remove the crankshaft.

A lil internet sleuthing will help you pop the head off and take it to a machine shop or install an already rebuilt unit.

Let's see pix of the camper!
I ❤️ Toyota fiberglass!

Sounds like you need a machinist, or a new cylinder head. Cracked head is generally no beuno. Wouldnt even consider doing guides at an amateur level.

Well sheriff, I think we had a drive-by. Fella hasn't been back since posting. :meh:

Thanks for the introduction to the forum. This motor is a 1985. I thought I read that it is the only year it was imported. It has the rocker, mounted off center I believe so the only head I can get is a "bare one". Yes I would not have to remove crankshaft but manual has me removing crank and camshaft pulleys for timing belt and there seems to be a slew of specialty tools needed for pulleys as well as valves etc. I have a few but the cam pulley seems to have a spanner with 2 dimples to hold pulley while nut is loosened. Anyway, I could possibly remove head but I am working outside and weather is changing and I don't feel confident with valve train. I did do that process on a BMW and it went well. I also did head once on ford escort.
A little on the RV and why I don't want to give up on this yet.
It has always been under a carport and I have had it in a barn. There is zero rust and never had any. It does not leak anywhere. It also has a Yanmar diesel generator. It is a 5 speed and the unit gets like 26 mpg. It is marginal top end but works ok. I replaced all silicon caulking with polyurethane. I replaced all trim. Got rid of any dry rot wood sub-frame behind rear wheel with pvc "wood". This was built by Mastercraft and there was a small area behind wheel wheels that wasn't protected by aluminum so that is why there was marginal dry rot. Previous owner replace all rubber bushings for front suspension, not sure anymore about torsion bar area. I did new front shocks and tires this year. Interior of truck is like brand new with no wear visible on seats etc. Original ac unit works as well as roof top. I replaced the RV water heater and got new cooling guts for refrigerator. I also replaced charging single phase converter for house battery with 3 stage. The roof is single piece of aluminum plate with no leaks. You can run everything off of the generator as well as use it for essential items in the home in winter when you loose power. The only paint issue is slight rough area on hood from turbo, not really noticeable, but I was going to repaint and put some kind of heat shielding under the hood. Not sure what I have pic wise, but I will try to attach with this post.
Anyway, I am in the Allentown area and this is my first diesel. I basically do all the work on my vehicles as I am a bottom feeder so i don't know many mechanics and I know zero diesel mechanics let alone one that has experience with this motor. I would consider replacing with a latter gen unit, but I do not know the ins and outs with going from mechanical fuel injection and also bell housing etc. for the 5 speed trans. Rear box is where the generator is. It has full gauge pack. Dwell, manifold pressure, oil, tack, battery etc. These pics do no justice and it says I can only load 5. you can see that engine does not have later plumbing for turbo.
