McNamara gear upgrade... should I?

You have it all apart, and it's only another $200. I'd just do it. Then you have basically new inupt gear plines to go with your new input shaft splines. No down side, other than the $200/

I would say yes. I just did mine (although it was on an A440) It is a really great gear. Made a huge difference in how the truck drives.

Considerable difference huh? I'm planning on installing one when I rebuild my tcase soon, but figured the biggest difference would be elimination of the reverse gear clunk.

Yes the reverse clunk is defiantly gone. With mine I also had a really loud hard clunk downshifting from second to first and that is gone also. All around the shifting is smoother and more solid.

Might be overkill or a waste of $$ for a manual tranny as the autos seem to be the ones that really suffer from worn splines. Have you checked to see if the McNamara gear will fit the output shaft of the H55F? I'm guessing it will.

Awesome. Hopefully I can tackle this project before the really foul weather starts. Luckily, a friend of mine said I could use his garage and he'd help me out. I think that's worthy of a case or two of beer in return, eh?

I went onto McNamara's website and a little lost.... Is this the part we all consider "McNamara's Gear"? ((LandCruiser Gearbox Main Shaft Kit))?

Jack McNamara - Differential Specialists

Is there a part number to identify this gear when ordering??

I want to order this too for my son's 62 which we'll be doing during the Christmas Holiday

TIA
Scott

What the gear is, is the main gear is a single gear as it is and the is a spacer and then the PTO gear. The mcnamara gear is it makes the spacer and the pto gear and main drive gear all one piece that is all splined together.

I hope that makes since. Not the best description about the gear. There are some good pictures here on mud if you search for mcnamara gear.

I wish I had taken a picture about mine when I had it not installed.

I'm not familiar with this upgrade. I can say that my H55, which I bought used with who knows how many miles, shifts easily and smoothly through all gears, both up and down. Can someone tell me what you get for $200?

Micah, tried to explain it above, basically the spline wear on the shaft where the gear is located. the upgraded gear has a splined section 2X's longer which spreads the load out more.

as stated above the problem existed on auto, not so much on manual trans

I thought this was something related to the toyota automatic transmissions? Does it apply to the transfer case?

I've seen the gear. I just don't know what to call it when I order it from them. They make different gears for Toyota's, Land Rover's, etc... Just want to make sure I order the right one.

Micah, since you orderred it.. do you have the packing list or invoice from them with a description of the gear or part?

Most people that do this upgrade do it on an A440 auto tranny. You see the main drive gear get worn on the input shaft going into the tranny. the main drive gear about an inch 1 1/2 inches wide and these are the spines on the gear and the shaft its self that are worn. What you get with the mcnamara gear is the main drive gear spacer and PTO gear that is one piece that is all splined. So you get about3 more inches of spline area that will be turning on the shaft that has previously never been used before. The new gear does away with the PTO gear its self. With the us models they do not come with the PTO option but for some reason the gear came through on them anyways. But the the mcnamara gear you just slide it on and that is the main drive gear with the spacer and the pto gear. Basically you replace 3 parts with 1 one part that takes up the same area on the input shaft as the 3 parts did.

Hope this helps a little bit.

I am out of town right now and do not have access to the number. I can get it for you on Sunday though. I emailed him and just asked him for the gear that is for the US model cruiser. He knows what you are asking for.

If your shaft and gear look like this than YES use the mcnamera gear. If not don't waste your money. The splines on 4 speed trucks almost never wear out but the automatics are a different story for some reason.

Thanks Micah, it would be greatly appreciated. I went ahead and sent an email off to them last night. I think I was able to describe it pretty well. Thanks again... this forum has been such great help.

I was just going to replace the seal, figured could go without the McNamara gear... until you guys convinced me other wise.. And the PICS above from 71-Cruiser just sold me...

Thanks again,
Scott
