McNamara gear upgrade... should I?

Just a few more comments.

The manual transmission shafts wear as well. Not as dramatically, but they still wear. I've had 2 19 spliners apart-the 130k one has a small descernable step. I would reuse. The 200k one has a significant step and I would not reuse.

The biggest problem in my view is that the gear also wears. So if you buy a new transmission, do you really want to put a worn gear on it that will increase the wear on the expensive new shaft?

There were some pictures at one time of someone who made a MacNamara gear by welding the gear, the spacer and pto gear together. The splines of the PTO gear then made up for the worn splines of the gear itself.

If your shaft and gear look like this than YES use the mcnamera gear. If not don't waste your money. The splines on 4 speed trucks almost never wear out but the automatics are a different story for some reason.

Holee crap. How many miles did you have on your drivetrain at that point? I'm up to 253K and have never pulled my tcase. Just started noticing a clunk in the last year or so though. Those splines look like they were on the fast track to complete failure.

Yeah I bet you are about due for the upgrade. I was at 156 when I replaced mine.

Someone posted on the 3FE list once, that their splines completely stripped out and he had nor forward or rearward motion at all. So they do fail. It would be interesting to ask Rodney why the A440 seems particularly prone to this, and why the same tranny in the FJ80 does not have this problem.

Spook-I'll bet you are there. You will be amazed at the wear when you tear into it.

I'm at 1/2 your mileage and I can hear a clunk. Not too bad, but I know what it is.

TrickyT on this board who is an original owner and maintenance freak had his go bad enough before 200k that he was getting a vibration on the highway just from those worn splines. It's perfect with the McNamara gear.

Anyway, it would seem like a false economy to not replace it if the whole thing is apart.

Sucks the US Dollar is so week....

I requested a quote from Jeff McNamara for the gear. Quoted via email: 420 AUD :o

Damn, and with the USD being weak over seas this calculates to $385.14 at todays rate! Also have to pay $40 for intl wire transfer. Total cost....$425 US... Oh well, this is what happens with 'SINGLE SOURCE SUPPLIERS!' They can name their price.....

And if you really need it, will pay for it! Usually without the lube and without a thank you! LOL

Right. Mine was a total of $470 AU when ordered in February of this year. The exchange rate was a bit better, but not much. No clunking with my auto other than into reverse. However, we finallly had it up on a lift this AM and quickly discovered some obvious slop. An overdue project that should be done today, thanks to a friend.

When I ordered mine I sent him $360, that was at the first of September.

I thought he took PayPal now?

The reason that the damage is more prevalent with the automatic is because the gears slam into reverse or drive. With the stick, the slack between the gear and spline is taken up as soon as you start to let up on the clutch.

Gear Order Update

Hey folks, just thought I'd update you... So I emailed Jeff McNamara of McNamara Differential about the gear, unfortunately he wouldn't let me pay via PAYPAL so I wired him the money from my bank (trick is get as much information as possible!) Anyway he received the wire transfer last Wed and he shipped it out the same day thru Australia Post (AusPost = USPS in Australia) and I got it today! I can't believe it! DOOR to DOOR in 5 days! Now that's what I'm talking about!

Now I'm just waiting for my FSM to come in from Japan :o (Toyota publications), order the t/case rebuild kit and when I get back from my Europe biz trip can get started on it..... Looks like we're going to have a busy Thanksgiving weekend of working on the truck!

Well congrats man, let us know if you run into any problems. I was there a month ago and remember the rebuilding really well.

Oh I agree. It's in the plans for when I tear into my tcase. I'm hoping my mid-month pay for November will cover getting a McNamara gear since that's the most expensive of what I need for the rebuild. My clunk is only noticeable if I'm listening for it, and no vibration on the highway as of yet. Granted about 60% of my miles are highway miles so hopefully my wear isn't too bad. It might be towards the end of winter before I'm able to get all the stuff together for the rebuild, so I'm hoping it makes it.
