I am going to have to replace my clutch in my 84 FJ60. I use it offroad and I have 33 in tires with an arb heavy lift. I was wanting to know what people think about the Martin Crawler Clutch compaired to the standard clutch.

Also what have people been paying to have clutch installed? Also did you have to replace anyother parts when you installed the Martin Crawler Clutch.

Thanks

The stock clutch seems fine to me. That's what I used and haven't had any problems. I'm not sure it needs improving but I don't see anything wrong with the Marlin kit.

I would also replace the throw out bearing, the pilot bearing (edit: I see those come in the Marlin kit) and maybe the rear main seal while you're in there. The RMS depends on your feelings about changing it without dropping the oil pan.

I rented a transmission jack and changed it myself (as part of a larger job), but I would expect to be charged 4-8 hours worth of labor + parts.

Make sure you have the alignment tool if you buy the parts from someone else.

I like the Marlin kit because it come with pilot bearing. I think 4 hrs would be about right for this job if you took it to a shop with a lift.

Depending on the miles on the current clutch; you will probably need to resurface the flywheel. I would plan for the extra downtime to take it to be machined. Look for broken teeth on the ring gear. Marlin's kit mentions a Japanese throw out bearing but doesn't include the pilot bearing in that sentence. In the Xfer case kit I bought from Marlin, they had substituted cheap Taiwanese seals, o-rings, and gaskets. No matter that it's small, that pilot bearing will cause just as much work to replace as the throw-out bearing will.

The rear main can be changed easily without dropping the pan. It's pricey but it's a common source of drips.

I would go local OEM and save on shipping or discounted OEM through Beno. Your 2F will never need a heavier clutch than stock.

Check your U-joints when you've got the shaft's disconnected.

Anyone with the stock PP force at set point ..?

Got me curious coz I know the factory 1HD-T ( turbo diesel engine in 80 series ) it's around 1400 lbs ( I have the exact number write somewhere ) and Exedy upgrade it's 2000 lbs .. ( they actually have a new release with 2200 lbs at set point )

I have worked the clutch pretty hard at URE on the mountain trails and stop and go traffic. Any paid for a clutch job recently?

That's actually a great question! I've been looming for that info too. I know with the Exedy clutches I sell they are compatible with the diesels (2h and 3b).

I am aware of the aisin clutch kit from rock auto ? I just like the "heavy duty" option starting on hills I have smoked the clutched a few times and I wonder if a clutch is a clutch and marlin vs aisin make a difference or not. I have other heavy duty parts on the truck now and I like to improve where I can and difference is price is negligible. 171 OEM VS 219 for marlin .

Do you still have the stock gearing? Moving to 33's requires extra clutch slipping to get going.

If not, 4.11s from a 62 will bring back to the stock ratio with 33's. You'll lose the rubber overdrive, though. Good thing they make a 5-spd to fix that!

I've been in the market for a new clutch kit as well. My throw out bearing started squealing like crazy after my last trip in the woods. Even though I still have good clutch engagement, I figured I might as well replace everything while I'm in there.

Did marlin get more kits back in stock? I was on there site about a month ago and they were sold out.
