Hi all, I have something very dodgy going on under the bonnet. I was driving a very long straight road, when the car suddenly started jumping/jerking. I think it was the fuel pump playing up. Checked the air filter and started her up with no problems however as soon as I turned the main beam on, the engine stalled. She will run smoothly with all other electrics on at the same time so its not battery/alternator. I managed to get her home by using fog lights and side beams however today Ive had a look at her and the main beam and high beam lights on one side are not getting any electrical supply. (all fuses are good) I can also now drive her round without any problems at all so the issue seems to be some sort or electrical gremlin between the fuel pump and right side headlight. Now that the rights side headlight and high beam are not drawing power, the fuel pump is running fine. Does any one have any ideas about where I should start with this? She's a 2002 Lc100

On the older 60s that is a ground issue from the distrib/coil/ignitor, But the 100s have a separate wire there, you might want to loosen and tighten all the connections there to start with.

Have you had any water leaking in down by the pedals on either side? There is also a leak problem back in the cargo area, behind the cover plate, a connector that tends to rot, and starts drawing amps. Don't remember if for the rear gate, or the brake lights, but attached to the back pillar.

I had an issue with corrosion on the blade of a fuse once. I never saw the corrosion but pulling and inserting the fuse a few times corrected the problem (fuel pump wasn't running) and it's never repeated. I don't have my service manual with me so I'm not sure what kind of short circuit protection the headlamp power has.

Hi Morganism, and thanks for your response. Yes! I have had quite a considerable amount of water that runs in down the inside left front pillar when I wash her (and over the kick panel electrics) I originally thought it was a badly installed windscreen so resealed that and washed it....water came in. Then sealed the sun roof drain, washed it and more water so Ive just removed the roof bars and sealed all the side trim on the roof hoping that will help. I'll check the earth points you mentioned but is there any where in the kick panel area I should be looking at?

Check your battery... In my 80 series i had a bad cell in the battery and when i did the exact same thing you are describing the engine would cut out for a second. Perhaps a quick swap of the battery can prove or disprove my theory. Good luck and i hope you find a quick/easy fix.

Hi all, well I just wanted to close this thread but dont really feel as though I found the solution. The lights malfunction was the power distribution box thingy so replaced that. Replaced the battery as they dont last more than a couple of years out here and gave all the Earths a tweek and clean. Also sealed the dodgy windscreen leak as I know that will cause a whole lot of problems. Feel as though the fault was something to do with the power distribution box thingy earthing somewhere where it shouldnt have been and hence effecting the fuel pump but not sure. Just want to say thanks for all your help though. Great forum! She runs great now but have no idea what was the real cause of the problem. Maybe she just needed a wash and a bit of tlc. Weekend here. Hope shes good for an 8h round journey surf trip. All the best and thanks again x
