Spent some (more than I wanted) time scrapping a cheap self-applied bed-liner of unknown origin from the tub of my 76 TLC Fj40, exposing some issues that were there before the liner was laid down. Not bad issues, but issues none-the-less. My rig, AKA the hunting mule, is less than pristine, but that's OK. I plan on "Patching and playing" the "issues" and re-applying "Monstaliner". Should I put down the Hookah pipe and slowly back away?......

There is a madness to my method!! Looking down the road at a tub "Resto" of sorts...Also, I'm afraid if I "purdy up the mule" too much it won't want to "git dirty" hunting/fishing anymore!! To be perfectly Frank, I like the concept/theory of a quality, well applied liner. The old liner was just 1st GEN and cheap/ill-prepped-ill applied and was intended to cover up a hole er' two/ hide some rust etc...

I read through every thread I could find on MUD REF: Monstaliner. Sent off for samples (thanks @magnetman) , read more outside reviews. I'm a think'en this is the right decision based on the intended use and subsequent environment I'll be ride'n the mule in.

I'll entertain all comments, statements or written manifestos!

Why not some good rubber mats? As you have found how much work it is to scrape it all off, why go something that is more permanent? Make the outside look purdy, leave the inside dirty, and you have the best of both worlds. The chicks will dig you because your rig looks sweet on the outside and then you can throw the animal carcasses in the back and simply hose off the mats afterwards.

bedliner :bang:

Yup...I know, I know, I know......But I have diamond plate for God's sake. What goes better with diamond plate? Bed-Liner!!!

I have very mixed feelings about bedliner. I've heard the horror stories of removing it (and I will have my own to tell, someday since my 40's bed is coated in it). I do think it is the #1 way to assure that any rust issue will go unnoticed and unchecked until the only thing holding your truck together IS bedliner.

That said, My truck has some old rubberized liner that is flaking off the bottom of the truck now. No idea how long it has been there, but where it has decided to peel, the metal is almost pristine underneath.

I think the compromise I've come to (with myself) is re-lining the underside of the tub for protection from rocks/the elements, etc. but painting the inside, then laying down mats. This way, if rust DOES rear its ugly head under the liner, at least I'll be able to see it from the other side (as opposed to losing it in a bedliner sandwich) and cut out the affected section for repairs.

Monstaliner does seem like an awesome product though, and the one I was thinking about going with.

After scrapping that crap from my tub for the past few Staurday's, the last thing I want to do is self inflict a sucking head wound...But, I like the concept. The fortunate son that buys my mule after I'm "look'en through dirt" can start a thread > "Help? How do you remove Monstaliner"

You mentioned a 'bed restore' down the line... why not two beds, with a quick on/quick off system? :idea:

One for huntin'/fishin'/explorin' and one for chick'n... :cool:

On a slightly more serious note... have you looked at Ron (@scrapdaddy 's) build? He used Lizard Skin insulation and sound dampening, followed by Monstaliner... and he did it right!! Looks great!!

Before Mud, I put Hurculiner on my 40. :mad: I absolutely hate it! After reading about Monstaliner, I gave it a shot on my BJ42 when I was fixing it up. I loved it! I would do Monstaliner again in a heartbeat. Granted, this was on an Aqualu tub, so rust was not an issue. However, it was very durable. I also liked that it was a smoother finish and easily washable. At some point, I'm going to remove the Hurculiner from my 40 and put in Monstaliner. I realize that there are many haters of bedliner on this site. But personally, I think it all depends on your perspective. I wasn't building a show car when I built my 42. And I was happy with the results.

YMMV

:cheers:

Either I mistake your shape and making quite;
Or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite
Call'd Robin Goodfellow: are not you he
That frights the maidens of the villagery;
Skim milk, and sometimes labour in the quern
And bootless make the breathless housewife churn;
And sometime make the drink to bear no barm;
Mislead night-wanderers, laughing at their harm?
Those that Hobgoblin call you and sweet Puck,
You do their work, and they shall have good luck:
Are not you he?

Thanks for the tip..I'll have a look see at the "lizard skin"!!

CR, I've applied Monstaliner to 5 projects. From a simple lower body rocker job around a rig to a full exterior 60 paint job.

I like the ML coating compared to any of the other DIY liners out there. It has its place. Here is where you need to weigh the final decision. You have all the old coating stripped off, you MUST apply a primer before applying the ML. SO, here is the crossroads...

PAINT OR LINER.. If you think you will have any thought of disgust if/when you scratch the paint due sliding materials in/out or dropping something on your bed/floor... PAINT IS NOT FOR YOUR APPLICATION, IMO.

IF you intend on scratching the hell out of it and want to protect the metal the best way possible. MONSTALINER IS YOUR APPLICATION, IMO.

Applying rubber mats will protect the floor, but would piss me off the first time I couldn't easily load something in the back, due to the rubber grabbing the item or bunching up on the floor. Also, you will need to keep any water removed from the underside of the mat. It will eventually start to cause issues.

ML is easy to touch up and Magnetman has small kits for this. However, I suggest touching up in sections, not spots, for strength and looks both.

All in all it is your decision and needs some thought. ML is TOUGH as nails and is extremely hard to remove once applied properly.

Just my .02

I'll send you the info that Ron sent me ... I haven't gotten to the point of actually doing it.

I realize that there are many haters of bedliner on this site.

I knew I was kick'en the hornets nest when I posted this...Hell I'm runn'en diamond plate too!! Guess I wont be speaking at the annual "Mud banquet"...Thanks for your honest and forthright opinion. I like the concept, just looking for the right product!

My mule "get's rid hard"....It is loaded to the gills during hunting/fishing season...I like your logic. It is the same thought process that I am considering for my application...It's not a pretty rig, it's functional for my intent...

I would strongly suggest Monstaliner and follow the prep and application directions THOROUGHLY!

I had diamond plate, too - and still have it on the front bib - no excuse to mess the truck up even more

my gripe with the liners is the texture - there's no way you can keep a lined truck clean from the desert dust

I would have no problem with smooth bedliner

Should I put down the Hookah pipe and slowly back away?......

I did that years ago and not sure it was the right decision if that's any help.

I hate diamond plate as well as bed liner. I have scrape 82 tub I got to cut a few things off of. First thing I did was remove the diamond plate from the back corners. Bed liner I have three pieces off a 84 HJ47 I picked up because they are hard tp find in the US. Transmission/transfer case inspection cover, fuel sending cover in the floor and the fuel fill cover. They are covered with bed liner and dreading removing that little bit. Rubber mats are find as long as your sure they aren't holding moisture underneath them. I pull my out regularly and clean under them and make sure it dry before putting them back in. I've been know to loosen the straps for the fuel tank and wash out underneath that as well because dirt holds in moisture. These things are easier to do than resolve a issue water and dirt getting under bed liner. I would rather have deal with keeping the paint clean than rust under bed liner down the road. Have my share of PO horror stories and really don't want to that that person to the next owner but that's just me. :meh:

Disclaimer: I live in AZ and have cut up a tub in the past that some people in the rust belt would say was almost rust free. Even my 82 tub is far better shape then I seen other people start with it. While I don't have the front clip I do have the frame and no sigh it was in a accident other then the rust I see no reason why the PO got a dismantling title for it. Or possibly because it had diamond plate on the back corners.:rolleyes:

Might as well put the damn bezel on upside down while you're at it. Oh and paint the roof black. Come on, don't stop at the bedliner and diamond plate. As they say, go big or go home! ;)

desert dust

Not a great deal of desert dust here in the hallowed hills ;), but I understand exactly what you are alluding to. The old liner was a dirt magnet....Part of the reason I started pulling it up...The reviews I've read on "Monsta" indicate a smoother surface. Henceforth, at least in my little infantry head, easier to clean....Flawed logic?
