Guys just a question were is the key for spare and jack handle located? is it with the jack itself or in another location not sure if mine is there ??
For me, all the tools, including key, were with the tool bag/pouch located in the small storage cubby that houses the jack.

Do all the spare tyre housings have a spare key on the lx 470 to remove wheel. My dealer told me order the long bar and fit it through the square hole on rear bumper and tyre should winch up down like the jack and come off.

I would pop off the little cover on your bumper that is under the tail gate and check. Shine a light in there and see what's up

I done that that thete is a nut shaped like a flower or star so maybe it does have a key to suit that. What a headache.

i had mine, and then I lost it AGAIN. turns out it had fell out of the tool bag and fallen into that abyss void under the metal bracket that holds the jack. There is a ton of space under the metal there.

Putting a new rear bumper on soon so just took it off but the first pic is where the 4 12mm bolts are that attaches the carrier to the crossmember. If you are in no rush just go to the dealer and get the key which is probably what I should have done but sometimes getting a task done gets personal. Going to mark this one down as a win. Time for a beer

I know this is an old thread, but I have the same problem, for some reason the previous owner decided to take the tool pack with him... makes no sense at all to me. Anyway, how the heck do you get those bolts off up top?! I can get a wrench on up there but I can't get anything to move at all and have very little angle to get any torque on the wrench... any tips? Thanks!

Is it just me, or do others have this problem as well - I cannot get that tool roll to roll up small enough to fit in the compartment with the jack and then get the little plastic cover to stay on. Frustrating...

I keep a breaker bar and socket in the pouch in addition to the other stuff, so make sure to roll it up tightly. Even with the additional tools, I can still get mine to fit well with the plastic cover over it as long as it's stuffed nice and tight in there.

Thanks for the tips, gang. After a night of penetrating oil and a second try I was able to get it down. Very glad I braced the spare in three places when the last bolt gave way, otherwise It definitely would have mashed my head and chest... Getting the anti-theft pin out was not super easy, basically a brute force flathead screwdriver and rubber mallet attack on that compression washer thing all the way at the base, then I used a pair of pliers to grab it and pull it free. I completely agree with all others that said this: it is a terrible bit of engineering, the slightest mud or rust in there would render the key completely useless and you'd be completely stuck. Better to have this thing gone and take your chances with the thieves.

Thanks!

This post was very helpful. I needed to get my spare tire updated but never did it since I bought it from previous owner. Anyway, I learned I needed a key. I went to 2 Toyota dealerships and most folks never heard of it. Luckily, I took my 01 LC to North Park Lexus in San Antonio. Craig at service knew exactly what I needed. He got the master service key kit from their road side assistance truck. We found the right key after few tries. He said that sometimes (so not 100% certain), your wheel lug nut key can be a match if you don’t know your spare key number. I tell you this if don’t know which part to order and don’t have access to the master service keys. There are 10 keys I noticed.

I just went ahead bought the key. It was about $35. My advice is if you have the key lock, just know/write down your key number in case you lose it. Makes it whole lot easier vs trying to fit and find.

I had this problem last week. In another thread someone posted the drawings which show 4 bolts that hold the lowering mechanism to the crossmember. I jammed my arm up above the spare from underneath and undid the 4 bolts and dropped the whole thing. Took about 45 mins.

I removed the spare tire wheel lock. It required dropping the spare tire + winch assembly and removing the key. It was not difficult. I am updating this thread with a link to the thread I posted pics in, since this thread was helpful to me.

Spare tire winch lock removal: Where can I find crank for spare tire?

Reviving this old thread...man probably the worst engineered piece I've experience on this LX470 so far (except the center console rear cupholders!). I'm going have to try some methods mentioned in here to get the spare tire down. There is so much dirt built up in their the special key won't even engage, very frustrating yesterday. In other news I somehow ran over (8) screws in 1 tire, and now getting 4 new tires...

New LX470 owner here who ran across this thread. I had no idea. I'm attaching a picture of my tool kit. Looks like I have a wheel key but nothing that looks like a key for the spare tire winch mechanism. I looked to see if the winch mechanism was keyed but it's bright daylight out and flashlight doesn't illuminate the area enough for me to tell. I'll check again in darkness where the flashlight may help. Can anyone confirm that my kit lacks a winch key? What does the winch key attach to in order to operate the winch? Without a winch key, does the loop end of the jack crank mechanism fit in the winch to operate it. I'm thoroughly confused but happy to be confused at home rather than on a dark road at night with a flat tire. I'm also confused about the long cylindrical tool with a hex head on the end. Could that be the winch key?----edit--I tried inserting the jack crank loop into the winch mechanism and it appeared to work so an astute former owner must have deleted the lock.

Hmm, yeah I don't see it there, but it looks like this

It's only like $20-30 bit I think. I'm going to completely remove mine, it SUCH a PITA!!!

Previous owner left behind the Mcgard color codes for both key locks, but no spare tire winch key, so I ordered one from McGard. Its the silver nubbin you see left behind in the pic and it is square and fits into the spare tire stick.

When you shine a light into the porthole, youll see a star pattern looking at you if you have a lock in place.
