There's a 2000 LX 470 for sale locally and was wondering if they're any good off road. I know it doesn't have a locker in the rear, but otherwise looks about the same as a LC. I'm assuming it has some type of traction control and a limited slip in the rear. Thanks, and looking forward to the input.

I cannot honestly answer your question as I do not own an LC. Im in the process of buying one.

I can tell you that I have yet to see dignitaries riding a wrangler across the dessert. At least in videos I have seen anyway.

I do like that the LX has the AHC, but I prefer the original LC. Personal taste.

In conclusion these are very capable vehicles that will take you where you want to go properly equi

I'd rather have a LC but they're hard to find here. I'm not looking to do anything too hardcore in the way of off roading. I got that out of my system when I had my SDP Pinzgauer. Still kinda regret selling it......

Sound like you want a jeep.

Edit-

Your username says 99 cruiser yet you're asking if the LX is similar? Where have you been?

No jeeps for me. I want something that's somewhat good off road and has a reputation for durability. Not something the local cheerleaders drive to the mall.

nope, they are the worst.

All about your perspective. I've owned a bunch of CJs. On the trail a mildly modified 100 is not in the same category as a mildly modified CJ. But, the CJ is more like a street legal tractor. The Wrangler too - better off road, miserable compared to a 100 on the street. I just drove my mother's new Avalon. Holy *$&@ is that a nice, quite, smooth, solid, fast, good-handling car. It makes my 100 feel like a 15-year-old truck. But, I hear the Avalon's not too good off road.

There is no vehicle more reliable than a 100 series Land Cruiser. So, check that box. As far for "how good it is off road"... that one's more a balance of how much "nice" you want vs. how much "hardcore" you want. For the guys on this board, the 100 is the right balance.

I test drove a land cruiser yesterday out side of Chicago. It was a rusty pile of crap. Sales guy couldn't even get it to start. Had to jump it. Anyway on my way home I saw an LX 470 at a local dealership. I'm assuming they're somewhat similar to a LC. Can't say I need all the frills though.

I was mainly inquiring about the mechanical diffrences between a LC and the 470. Sandroads post seems to sum it up pretty well. I know that LC's are renowned around the word for their off road capability and reliability. Can't say I hear much about the 470 around my part of the country.

I owned a wrangler. Awesome. The short wheel base got old fast.

Thank you @Manhattan. Straight answer to his question. Yes they are good off road in most aspects, not so in others. Great all around though and pretty much identical to the LC. I'd go to Google and look at all of the videos out there of 100's off roading. Good luck in your search.

Funny - I actually wanted a LX but ended up with a LC coming out of a heavily built 80..... the only downside to the LX is some extra stuff IF you want to really build it... otherwise the AHC can be a real advantage..... if 33's and some light armour are enough then I'd for sure do one.... the interior is a bit nicer and the headlights are far better, and typically the leather holds up better over time it seems.

I've had 6 40's, 4 80's and this is my first 100 and I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner..... but I still covet an FJ45 as a toy....

for a DD it's just about perfect for my lifestyle - and my aspirations.... and it has solid after market support finally. Unlike the Pinzguer - as cool as they are....

Cheers

Yep. Main reason I got rid of the pinz was trying to get parts for it. It was great off road but on road was not so nice. I have an F150 as a dd now and want a truck thats decent off road and comfortable and safe on road. I'll take a look at the LX, but I really want a 99 LC. Hence my screen name.
