Finally today I removed the whale tail spoiler from my LX470 2006.
It was faster than I expected, now I need to order the new center stop light and figure how to plug the holes.

I would like to get some Ideas to plug the holes, please. (if including pictures, better)
Yes I could go to the bodyshop but this will be my last option.

Here my 2cents to the MUD community

Some pictures and the FSM procedure (ET-8)

“1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
2. REMOVE REAR SPOILER
(a) Using a screwdriver, detach the 4 claws and remove the 2 rear spoiler covers
(b) Remove the 2 bolts.
(c) Put protective tape around the spoiler.
(d) Insert a piano wire between the vehicle body and spoiler.
(e) Tie objects that can serve as handles (for example, wooden blocks) to both wire ends.
(f) Pull the piano wire and scrape off the double-sided tape that holds the spoiler to the vehicle body.

(g) Slide the spoiler in the direction of the arrow and detach the 2 clips. (up and front direction)
(h) Disconnect the center stop light connector.
(i) Remove the spoiler.”

With mine, it was not necessary the piano wire (red lines), because the spoiler not was glued at all, I would suggest try to slide it, if it is glued, follow the above procedure.

It was necessary to remove the garnish of the back door, in order to remove the segment of wire between the spoiler and the main back door wire harness.

Parts needed
(1) 81570-60061 LAMP ASSY, center stop (high mount lamp)
(2) 90179-05011 high mount lamp grommet
(2) 90950-01865 high mount lamp clip

Tools
Socket 10mm
Phillips Screw drive
Teflon/plastic prybar (for trim and molding)

Nice looking truck! What size and type of tires are you running there?

Thanks for the nice step-by-step. Have been thinking about the same mode on my '06.

btw, looks like you're just up the street from me (I'm in Lower Gwynedd). Let me know if you're ever interested in heading out wheeling, or otherwise need a hand wrenching on the truck.

sonk76, thanks, I am running Cooper SST, 315-75-16, on stock LC100 16" rims.
Ohh yes, I like the old fashion look of the African hundy, not spoiler, no stock roof rack, etc.
waoo, yes we are so close, of course that i am interested on wheeling, and an extra hand wrenching the truck always is welcome. I will send my contacts by PM.

So you lost the 3rd tail light? Fine looking rig btw
No, I didn't lose the stop light, but this light is different than the center stop light w/o whale tail spoiler. thanks by the rig compliments

haha

personally I kind of like the tails, if my year had it (when I get a newer one) i don't think id remove it unless i put on a roof rack
well you know, some people love it and some not. I liked while the truck was stock

Wow, by comparing the first two pictures you can really see how much that thing weighs! :D
hehhee is funny, but i just remove the spoiler after the lift been installed, and it need some load on rear.

Very nice !

It looks like the steroids are working on that rig.......
Can't wait to see it.... Keep up the good work...

hole plugs?

Just removed the spoiler from my '06. What solution did you find to eventually plug those holes? Thanks!

Can i buy it from you? I want to see if i can make it work on my 98.

I'm looking for a solution to plugging the holes too. It seems that an answer has yet to be provided. I'm also curious of how to remove and install the center brake light on the truck, I see the plate but it is not coming of eady, not sure I want to force it. Help!

Thanks for the thread bump, I hadn't found this thread and would love to ditch that plastic. The foam tape that helps to hold mine down has come apart and the whole thing wobbles and rattles when I shut the hatch.

I'm about to remove mine on my 01 100 are the parts the same between the LX 06 and the 01 100? Did anyone figure out what to plug the holes with?

I used pan head allen bolts, that I painted the factory color. You have to be looking for them to see them, and even then they look factory.

I pulled my tail off today. Maybe I shouldn't have but I also pulled off the plastic retainer rivet things. I tried to find some plugs that would fit at the auto shop but didn't find anything I liked. I'm going to go to a specialty place Monday and hopefully I'll be able to get it worked out.

The hole from the electrical plug (which I had to shave the plastic down to get it pushed through the hatch) is about 5/8" and the holes from the plastic retainer things are about 3/8".

I'm also searching for a hatch 3rd brake light and am hoping I can find a used one in good condition in the next few weeks.

I just used the hex heads that were holding the spoiler on and added 2 new rubber seal washers. I plan to pain them white. I have yet to figure out how to plug the wiring hole. For now I just left the wire and gasket incase it rains.
How did you remove the to plastic. Rivet retainers? They look like they are pop riveted on.

I re-installed the hex heads for now like you but didn't add any rubber washers, I ought to though. I'm hoping to just find a rubber plug that will fit the hole from the wiring but need to get to a bigger parts shop.

I removed the rivet things with some pliers, basically I just broke the top part off and the bottom part fell down into the door. Had I known that was going to happen I would have broken the part with the hatch up then tried to fish or jiggle it out.

My paint is pearl white so its the fancy three stage stuff so I think I need to either leave it black or get a real good color match to make it look good. Plain white paint on my rig would look worse than just a black plug I think.

I have been looking for a used third brake light for almost a year now, they are extremely hard to find, as the hatch is sold with them for a pretty penny for rear end collisions. I'm at the point now after looking for so long where I'm willing to pay for a new one they are around $200 bucks.

Can you take a picture of the holes? I haven't taken the wing off and I want to see what I'll be dealing with

I'll try and get a decent picture tonight after work. I called CruiserParts and they have used ones listed for about $140 used, new would be $240. Thats the only place I've been able to find them used, I'm not sure where else to look though or how to find what I'd need. Ebay has new ones for $200.

Thanks. Used ones usually have faded finish and take a chance on the LED lights working (not replaceable). You can buy a brand new one from Toyota for less than $190 bucks part number is
81570-60061

Why don't you guys just install labraks light bracket instead of trying to cover the holes. It's made for people that removed the wing and uses the existing holes for the bracket. Then you can mount a small LED light pod for backing up or setting up camp.
