Lucky me, a new worrying noise! Possible RTH?

Was the car parked with it's nose downhill to make this noise by chance?

Uh.

It's possible. Should I be feeling stupid now? Was the oil pickup angled such that it was causing the pump to cavitate or something? I know the truck was reparked a few times and continued to make the noise, but it was in the same spot I suppose. I did check the oil after I pumped gas and I still hadn't shown any loss so I don't know why the dealership felt compelled to add a qt, but no skin off my back.

This incident was anti-climatic. Nate, got anything else for us?

Indeed, another non-closure.

Got the cruiser back, sure enough the noise seems to have stopped? When I get home I might run an oil change to a M1 50w blend and send this oil off for analysis.

What about a loose torque converter bolt or a cracked flexplate?

I was having a similiar dull knock coming from the oil pan area and then I realized I only heard it when parking with front of vehicle lower than the back.

If on perfectly level ground or if my nose slightly up, no noise.

I believe its the crank pounding into the oil when the oil is higher in the oil pan.

I remember seeing a post about the noise coming from the engine if the front end was on a sharp angle downward from the rear. I have experienced this same random kinda galloping noise when parked on a hill like in my driveway. I think it was only when it was cold but don't remember nor have I heard it since my HG replacement I also replaced the timing chain, slipper, and water pump while I was in there maybe one of those was the culprit. Good Luck.

Did you ever find a resolution to this problem?
I have the same issue. I suspect the timing chain / slipper.
The sound is exactly the same as yours. I have owned my rig for 6.5 years and everything is in tip-top shape. Have had several mechanics try to diagnose the problem.
Its been making the noise for 2 years and I have made numerous long distance trips in it without any problems.
The noise drives me crazy. Seems the worst under a light load around 1800 to 2000 rpm or sitting at idle with the front end of the car downslope from the rear end.
The noise does not appear until full operating temp is reached and the cooler the weather the less loud it is. In extreme cold it dissapears completely. I have tried to hear it in sub-20 degree weather with the windows rolled down and cannot hear it at all.

Might as well jump in...just did an oil & filter change - first time using Mobil 10w40 high mileage fully synthetic and NAPA Gold filter. Drove locally for a few days, everything great, quiet and on level. Tonight, drove down to Boca Raton and back - approximatlely 80 miles r/t interstate highway and there's a very audible "knock" in my motor -when I pull into the driveway - fluctuates with RPM. 171, 500 miles and never the slightest noise or problem. Checked the oil and right up there. Sent a copy of this post to Mobil too. I'll check it again in the daylight - there goes my plans to fly home for Christmas - fingers crossed:frown:

Hey Natergater did you ever come to any conclusions on this noise? I'm trying to diagnose a noise like yours.

Thanks,

I took others word for it and assume it is the sound of the crank smacking into a pool of oil. Makes sense since it only happens on an incline, but naturally I find the noise really unsettling either way.

Blackstone reports continue to come in clean with 7k intervals and nothing special to report running wise. I ping quite alot but I think this car basically never got FI cleaner, so I expect to find a horrid amount of carbon when the HG eventually goes.

No rod nock or piston slap sounds to report since, though.

So am I to gather from this that you are waiting for the HG to go? Or are you waiting for the Blackstone reports to indicate that it is close and then replace? How many miles currently on the truck?

Just morbid curiosity.

Sounds like you a diesel conversion:doh:

LoL. I mean it's an original HG and had a weak fan clutch for a while. The POs didn't drive it much later in it's life so the failing fan clutch may not have been as huge of a factor. That said coolant is ever so slowly just disappearing  No bubbles in the rad, and plug #6 has been coming out looking like the others but it seems like it is just a matter of time. If you account for differences due to tire size I'm right at 130,000 on the clock. Switched to Mobile 1 10W-40 since Florida is scorching hot more often than it is mildly cool. Still pings pretty annoyingly, but there is nothing I can do about that short of taking the engine apart which will happen with the HG failure.

I figure it's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. I just hope it happens while I am in Tampa so I have a garage and tools to work with :frown:

I suppose it is hypothetically possible that the pinging I'm hearing is actually happening under more load than I realize and that the I actually am hearing rod knock or piston slap. Not much I can do about it though, so I'm going to assume it's just a weird harmless noise and move on my way. Haven't heard it since, anyways.

OK, thanks. I think I've got my knock/tick narrowed down now.
