Lubed at Jiffy Lube

I guess I'll just quote myself here:

"So, ah...what did the manager say happened to the expensive Mobil 1 gear oils you dropped off with the rig??"

And...

"PS - what's in your other diffs, and your tranny, and did they top off your coolant with the green stuff?"

Also, I'm no lawyer but I believe you're about to get hosed by the legal system by driving the truck around. Unless you've got a written admission they did this, and that they instructed you to drive it around as well - you're knowingly damaging your TC by driving it and in court would be assigned a portion of the repair damage as a result.

Damn...I am so pissed off. Another lesson learned. I took my new-to-me 93 LC with 97k miles on it to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed...while there I decided to go ahead and get the diff and transfer case fluids changed out to M1 gear oil. Three thousand miles later and with a loud whine up front I decided to call the local land cruiser mechanics, LCS Offroad, to see what the whine was. The first thing they said was to check the transfer case to see if there was Dextron instead of gear oil..and sure enough, the freaking transfer case was runnining on Dex. Ughhh...The Jiffy Lube manager said they will take care of it, but we will see if they come through. The whine is like a WWII dive bomber...This is what I get for being lazy and not having any freaking time.

Im sorry to hear that... :frown: I'd say :flipoff2: to any lube place out there...

They did put the M1 gear oil in the diffs....I checked....triple checked. The Jiffy Lube manager was the one that said to drive it around a day or two to see if it quiets down. The guys that checked the transfer case at the different Jiffy Lube said they had it documented on the computer and would vouch for it being Dex 3 in the transfer case. I will keep you posted.

Dan,
What is the cost of new transfer case?

Less than you might think. Suggested list price is $2,527.12

Unfortunately there are none in the country at the moment and it would need to come from the homeland.

Regardless, if it were my vehicle I would insist on it. Politely, but no backing down.

OK guys...just got a call from the guys at LCS Offroad..they said the whine was not from the transfer case, but from the front diff....dammit. Does he have to tear into it to change out the bearings that the third member rides on? Can he do in situ? If the whine was not from the transfer case, what should I do with Jiffy Lube???

david

just get a new transfer case anyway! then sell the old one since none are in the country according to cdan. use that money to buy a lift and some mud runners!

Did they lube the drive shafts as well?

Perhaps they over lubed the Ujoints.

Did they put enough fluid in the diff?

"...at the different Jiffy Lube said they had it documented on the computer and would vouch for it being Dex 3 in the transfer case."

Wow, you are one trusting guy. You drove away with absolutely nothing in writing pertaining to the error, didn't you? And you still have nothing whatsoever in writing that shows Jiffy Lube put the wrong fluid in your center diff, eh?

For a lot of reasons it seams to make more sense to do your own work whenever possible.
