28 DAYS LATER

The 73 is home from a stay at Tor's Treatment Center (AKA Torfab) and it has been worth the wait. Headlights, driving lights, horns, seats, Dynamat, brakes, shocks, shackles, bushings, u-joints, rear diff, injector rebuild, general service and a new radio. Hell of a birthday present.

Took the long way home and put over 100 miles on it just to see how things turned out.

Good News:
- It runs like a 3B
- 21 MPG per GPS/Google Maps
- I have tunes (Alpine mechless head unit)
- It is very comfy / smooth (OME shocks, shackles, OEM rubber bushings, BMW seats)
- No lift for Her Wonderfulness :princess: (we kept the original leaf packs and they ride just fine)
- Very nice tone/volume from dual mini air horns (Stebel)
- Dash/engine compartment wiring cleaned up - new batteries, boxes, connectors
- Heads (Truck Light LED) work well and the spots (Lightforce LED) are tied to high beam circuit
- New tail light assemblies (replacing very strange European configuration of bulbs/lenses)
- Even with windows down/open, no floor mat or side panels, it is noticeably more quiet thanks to Dynomat
- Tundra/Taco take-off rims and Toyo Open Country AT IIs went on with spacers - produced exactly the look/ride height I was hoping for

Bad News:
- It runs like a 3B
- Old people on bicycles flip me off as they pass on hills - slow traffic turn-outs/lanes are my only salvation
- Exhaust is shot - crushed tailpipe, rotten muffler with multiple leaks, etc. Truck cabin smells like a benzine outhouse
- A few new nits to pick (tach, speedo, oil press gauge)

Good News:
- I have a turbo kit on order from Diesel42's next production run - that and a new exhaust system should resolve most of the power/smell issues
- Will finish up the turn sigs, grille, new hood pad (OEM), rubber floor mat (OEM), interior trim, etc. this week

Could not be happier with the results, thanks to Tor, Josh, Adam, Yan, Onur, and the 7X Mudders.

A few quick fotos to start, more / better snaps to follow.....

You'll be happy with the driving lights........
I am planning to cook with them...after I scare the game to death with my air horns.

I still cannot fathom why an owner of a hdfte won't put that engine in the chassis.

You can get so many of the conversion parts down to the motor mounts from Toyota USA. Many others from hdj78/79 pop up used on ebay AUS all the time. You can retrofit your existing h55 to the hz input and bearing retainer- hell the drivelines stay the same.
Other than electrics, the big dollar item is the 300mm flywheel which cannot be readily found used.

do it man. 85mph all day long and equal or better mpg. And it moves unlike the 3b which is a good light weight swb 40 series engine.

Rick
Thanks for the comments-I agree with your conclusions but budget and economics have a hand in this

Not sure if the 73 is the best destination for the FTE, since it can safely be upgraded to 300+ hp

So let's turn this question around, folks.

In what model would you install this motor?

Expedition 60 series?

Daily driver 100 series?

Other suggestions?

It would fit nicely in a 100 since it got the 1HD-FTE from the factory.

60 would be interesting.

H55F like Rick said would be the way to go since the bellhousing and input shaft are available in the US (heck, I have them in stock in my parts department).

Oink, oink... You NEED a Pig, Ward and it's the PNW thing to do! Haha.

In all semi-seriousness, 300HP wouldn't be too much for me in a 73, or anything else, although the FE scares me (hell, all diesels scare me) and there doesn't currently appear to be a recipient worthy of the "investment".

There's no debating that

"H-D-T-F-E-70-3"

doesn't roll off the tongue in an erotic way, either.

The mental image reminded me of my kids on Halloween, staring out the window at 4:30, waiting for the first second of darkness. Hahaha.

Charles/Chris -
Sorry to say that I still do not have a night time shot of the heads/spots. Living in the far north (almost to southern Canada), I usually fall asleep before it gets dark.....
