3300 bucks for the kit. A solid 1FZ with a fresh head gasket and you are game-on.

might as well punch it out "while you're in there".
Bahaha.

FZJ 73T ??

Result: 1,600 hp, no savings account, no drivers license, no wife - classic fail and a bent truck

Maybe an HDJ74 if I quit eating and going to movies...

I don't want to end up like this guy

Hello,

On newer 70 Series the 1GR is mated to an H150 transmission.

If you go with the 1FZFE your choices are an automatic transmission (the only option available in the US) or the H151. Same with the 1HDFTE.

I am not sure if the US 1FZFE engines' ECUs must be replaced if a manual transmission is used. Time to check the manual.

A 1HZ engine can use either an H55F gearbox or the R141/151.

Except for the auto and H55F, these transmissions can be hard to source in the US.

Availability wise, I would go for the 1FZFE. Auto or manual, it is great (and reliable) for a 70 Series. Mileage is not that bad.

If a source for diesel engines is available, I would go for the 1HDFTE. The 1HZ is an excellent option if the 1HDFTE cannot be obtained.

Bottom line, check the transmissions you can get.

My two cents.

Juan - Thanks for the info. We can get almost anything here....at a price.....including exotic and mysterious things like diesel engines! I have two trucks with H55 transmissions, enjoy them and would like to stick with that platform for transmission.

Hello Ward,

I advise to stick with the H55. Parts commonality and experience are important, in my humble opinion.

NEW SHOES GOT POLISHED
Tacoma take-off wheels got blasted and powdercoated - roll bar parts as well. Fast/well-executed job at a reasonable price by Powdercoating, Inc. in Mukilteo, WA. Dupont Alesta color code 7012. Will mount later this week.

Mowing season and other domestic duties have put a massive blockage into the LC progress plan. That said, the Burrito is getting a weekly work-out, commuting to the local waste transfer station. Thinking of renaming it as the Burrito GT (garbage truck).....

This is a light load, worth around $15 in dump fees. Of course, as a benefit, I now know how much the truck actually weights - 3,900 and change.

I promise to get back on the truck as soon as mowing is caught up.

Happy Spring, guys!

When you describe it like that it makes it sound so much better than a "dump" site. : )

Trying to be politically correct in my new neighborhood.

I once worked in a rural community (Hobart, WA) with a real dump (rustic landfill) which was free for all comers. County decided to start charging and brought in a small shack for the toll taker. Some local lads took exception and converted the shack to firewood with a wee bit 'o dynomite (local spelling and pronunciation). No big deal as this was 30 years prior to 9/11 and the only terrorists around were teenagers. County converted to a trailer for housing of the toll taker, who took it home each evening at closing.

Rear door latch:
1. Missing handle and stripped stud/screw threads - required Vice Grip to open back door.
2. OEM part numbers
3. The real deal (thanks, Yan!)

MOTOR / WHEEL UPDATE
The 3B is responding well to prolonged abuse - weekly trips to dump, etc. It smokes less for shorter periods after start-up, smells better and has more poop. Cruises on flat at 120 km/h. Less anemic on hills. May be a keeper. Clean up, compression test in next few weeks.

Getting ready for tire purchase for the new wheels - taking advantage of Les Schwab summer sale - 245/70 R16 Toyo Open Country AT II (10 ply) for $178 each. Got the 1.5" spacers mounted, along with original (from my purchase) wheels. Called to confirm hours (it was getting late on a Saturday) and was told the sale was over two days ago..... fawk. Well, there's next year's sale. Plenty of life left in the skinnies.

Good news is that the spacers definitely put the old and new wheels where I need them. See below.
