Lots of Searching but no visor shelf

Why would you even say that.

Since I've only had my cruiser a month or so and have only done the lift so far a visor shelf would be pretty far down on my list (roof rack, tires, lights, battery, etc coming first) but is there a price somewhere that I've missed? The shelf looks pretty good and pretty useful.

Why would you even say that.

Ever been in a bad accident where you were thrown forward with incredible force? I have. It is an eye opening experience, trust me.

Everyone considering this shelf should be considering whether they'll hit their head on it in an accident. Hitting your head on this shelf in a high speed accident could be the last thing you ever do. The taller you are the more concerned you should be.

When vehicles are designed, there is much consideration for what will happen to the human body in an impact. When you start to modify the inside of the vehicle, you potentially negate the safety considerations designed into the vehicle. If you'll notice the design of the visors....they are soft, not hard as a rock which means the designers felt there was at least a chance that someone driving the vehicle would hit their head on the visor in an accident. This shelf will hang one hell of a lot lower than a visor hangs. I was simply pointing that out.

With that said, I'll likely buy the shelf. I am only slightly taller than 5'10" and my head doesn't come that close to the roof of the vehicle. Besides, I like to drive with the seat cushion fairly low as the lumbar support works best for me in that position.

I like the idea of the extra space. I am extremely frustrated with how messy my vehicle becomes when I wheel or hunt. I have maps and other gear all over the front of the truck. This shelf will help solve that problem.

If I prove to be the litmus test in an accident, so be it. That is the chance I am wiling to take to gain the space.

It would be good to see some photos of someone sitting in the drivers seat with the shelf installed. I am sure I am not the only person who has been following this thread that has thought of impacting their head on this shelf in an accident. Knowing the height of that person would also be helpful.

Yeah the forces involved in a car crash are amazing, and those thoughts are exactlyt the same I get when i get into a couple of friends' 70 series cruisers with internal roll bars. They say youll never hit it in case of an accident but I think they underestimate the physics at play during a car crash, especially at speed.

Anyway, if youre concerned about this, why not consider a regular roof console??? like the ones offered by outback, they run down the middle of the roof in between the two front seats so you wouldnt hit it in case of a frontal crash. They have similar space to what you can have and the best part is they hold on to the screw holes from the oem dome lights so you dont have to modify anything..

Here in Venezuela there's a manufacturer called TEC 4x4, they make similar roof consoles to what outback offers and have a lot of webbing on the outside of it to hold maps and papers and such.

yeah, but at $446 bucks plus shipping from aus that is quite a gamble if it does not work out. I feel better buying from a vendor on this forum I know sells here and has a reputation.....

This is a great idea but here in the US, most of our 80 series come with sunroofs. That makes this roof console impractical for us.

I am no automotive engineer, but I would think that working seat belts and an air bag would mitigate any real dangers of coming in contact with this shelf. I am not worried about it.

Air bags what's that? Suspension? How does that help? ;)

Face to windshield interference is a real issue in many crash scenarios...my :princess: proved that in her '07 RAV4 last year. Lap/shoulder belts are not absolute...5-point harness time?

Good and valid point raised TexasJack!

Blown Away

Akella,

Thanks for doing this! Visors look okay too.

Looking forward to placing my order!

Cheers,

John

So you cut it yourself and install that gasket.?

They will be coming to me precut. It will be slightly cheaper for me to get them uncut, but i just dont have time for it

X2. I just installed my beautiful $250 Rosen aircraft sun visors. Am I not able to reuse them? The Rosen have the exact same base as OEM.

They may work as they are not as thick as oem. What are the dimensions for them?

Can you give me a price for shipping to the uk.

If there are other people on this side of the pond that would like one I don't mind dispatching them if it helps with shipping to the uk

I cannot give you pricing to overseas right now as i dont have final weight and dimensions of them shipping box. Stay tunned and i should have it in about 2 weeks.

yes, curious as to why the 1st picture showed a non cut upper portion and the second picture showed it cut? I would assume that these will come "cut" and ready to use?

also, curious as to how they actually mount to the headliner? in a few pics there are screws that look like wood screws or ?, I think I understand how the center portion mounts, but how about the side pieces? how are these firmly attached to the headliner area?

They will be sold ready to install. Only the thing you will have to cut is opening for a radio or switches.

You can see a screw in the left corner of the shelf. It it wood screw that go into the place of sunvisors screw.

my thought is you could probably mount the cb to the bottom of the center section using the supplied angle bracket that comes with most cb's? that is what I plan to do. The plus to this is it leaves the face of the center section open for switches and or guages, which I am going to have several of.

I am not sure that will work as it will interfere with the mirror.

These look good. I am in. I'll be curious to see if the first person who has an accident with this shelf gets a big cut on their forehead or whether the airbag will stop them in time. Either way, I want more storage space so I'll take the chance. That is the only thing that has frustrated me in the 16 years I have owned my 80. Hopefully I won't be the litmus test on the head bang!! :bang:

It is good point. When i installed the shelfs i tried to see how close my head can get to the shelf and i could not get it touched, but than it will depend on how tall you are and on your seating position.

I like it. Soft ceiling here. I know I am late to the game but my uncle has a plastic molding company

Pm me his contact if you dont mind.

I'm more worried about all the idiots talking on the phone and texting these days.

And for the record I wouldn't sell a shelf to anyone with an injury lawyer on retainer.

I would be happy to take mine uncut if possible. Looking for room to mount altimeter and tilt gauge at head height. Also want enough room for mic holder.

Cheers,

John

Just messaged my cousin on Facebook. I will get back to you when I get that info

Thanks.

Looks pretty good, do you think that shelf would support some weight or will it be limited to paper products?

It will hold more that a map, but i wont suggest to put any extra heavy objects over your head.

I can't wait to get a unit.... perfect job. What are the max sizes for a sunvisor and what thickness are the ones you have on them?
