losing coolant after h/g replacement

The overflow outlet is between the sealing surfaces of the cap. The pressure tester only pressurises the radiator and not the no-man's land in between that and the top lip. Look at your rad cap and the overflow bib location and you will see what I mean.

If you were to pressurise the system in a manner that left the stock cap in place, at some point you would push air/coolant into the jar.

ok well that's why he didn't trust that plastic adaptor. I would be confident it would seal the top of the rad, but nowhere near as confident about the overflow.

another brain storm. If my rad cap is bad, that would lead to a lot more activity in the overflow (back and forth) than usual, correct? that might explain why I am seeing so much movement right now.

The adapter I borrowed from a mechanic buddy was a heavy cast and chromed piece with high quality rubber O rings and sealing surfaces top and bottom. Nobody around had an adapter at all - kind of annoying considering how common this radiator neck design is. I'm guessing you're good but remember to get it properly full (all air out from a day's driving or so) before starting your measurement checks each morning.

Absolutely. Also boilover at a lower temp., so over all not good.

Rear heater hose

I had a pin hole leak in the rear heater hose. I could not find it for the longest. I was leaking onto the starter. I finally found it, and had it repaired. About a month later, my transmission died on the road. Apparently, the anti-freeze leaked into the neutral switch housing on the transmission and shorted it out. I was concerned that I was going to have to replace the tranny (major $$), but was "lucky" getting a new switch installed for $400 did the trick.

Good luck finding the leak.

How was this tested?

Just curious,

pressure tester with an adaptor plate and it would not hold pressure for more than a few seconds. then a visual inspection and you could see the torn rubber.

just got raped to the tune of $26.95 for a new one from my local stealer. ih8shortnoticepartorders  the parts guy there is so nice and helpful and oblivious to how insane his prices are that i have to almost bite my tongue off not to have a tantrum.

incidentily i notice the rad cap is rated at 88 kpa which is a little under 13 psi so maybe I should have been testing it at 13psi not 15.

It sounds like your issue is fixed Simon. See you had to change your HG to find you had a bad Rad Cap.

Good Luck, I mean it!

i'm going on a hill climb tonight to see. if it is fixed it ain't luck, it's who you know, and i have had some pretty good helpers along the way here...

incidentily, speaking of who you know, how's that cm06 waiting list looking :D

just to finish this thread off, the tightened hoses have cured the problem. Went 2500 miles last week with no coolant loss.

Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, all weekend I kept thinking about this thread and meant to ask you how it was going. I guess no news is good news. :) :) :)

Congrat's,

done. not much interweb for me during moab. and i think i wanted to get home before aclling it good. ;)

Nice..

weird

my overflow tank is bone dry this morning. I hadn't checked it in a week. I was out of town for half of that, so it has gone all of 70 miles in short 10 mile or less hops.

going yto moab and back overflow fluid level stayed rock steady 1/2 way between full and empty for over a week and 2500 miles but as soon as I get back into town the problem is back. the rad itself seems to be full.

it looks like I have a leak problem only when the system is cool. I will try again to rent a pressure tester so I can test it stone cold.

What altitude do you live at? Just roughly, of course.
