I have a 95 FZ80 that will not start. This started back a couple weeks ago. We thought it was the fuel pump, because it was running, and when it was shut off, it would crank but not fire. Replaced the pump & still won't fire.

Have since done dist cap, wires, plugs, new battery, FPR and EFI relays. We found a wire that had worn through and broke (coming through the round hole in the battery box) and repaired. It now cranks when connecting the battery (did I mention new starter as well?).

The weird thing is that when I do connect the battery (and when its cranking) there is no electric to the lights, radio etc. Have one small light on dash that comes on (air bag?) and the the turns signal light (on the dash) comes on but does not blink.

It has a Viper car alarm installed by a previous owner (we have never used it), could that be the source of the problem? I can't understand why there would be no power to the lights etc even when connected to the battery.

Any help or insight would be much appreciated!

Picture of battery cables/connections would be good. So we can get an idea what the previous owner has done there.

Typically if you have no CEL then the engine will not start (it will crank). Do some searching on this site, lots of writeups on fusible links.

Fusible links are often the issue, there a 3 of them that connect right to the battery positive post along with a thick gauge wire that runs directly to the starter motor.

cheers,
george.

here are three or four pics...

Thanks George! I found a link to order the fusible links...must be the issue. The wire that wore through was one of the three, so this should fix it.
Got a nice tune up in the meantime haha!

And it looks like your current set may not be installed correctly.

I've got everything pulled out (old wires), ill order the new ones tomorrow and install (and clean it up a bit too)

Thanks you two!

ok, so I got the fusible links and cleaned up the wiring. Got the truck started, but it won't shift out of park, no radio, clock, pw etc.
Charging light is on, no other gauges work. Could I have blown another fuse?

You may need to reset some relays in the fuse box.

Ground the coil/igniter package to solid body and block bolts. Clean the hold down bolts for the coil holding cage. When the resistance goes up, it starts cooking other parts of electric system. Your new rotor inside distrib may be cooked again because of that grounding issue. Check main alternator wire too, make sure it's not melted.

There is a thread here called "is my alternator about to ..."', and it has some posts relating to a major connector behind the gauge cluster. I can't get search to work right now.
