So long story short, my wife came to me in October of 2005 and let me know we had a little one on the way. I was working two jobs. One was to pay the bills and one was more of a passion. Well it was time to be at home more often so I had to quit the one that wasn't making much money. But I needed a project so I did not go stir crazy waiting for the little one to arrive. I had always wanted a FJ40 so I got the wife's blessing and there is where this project started. Some seven years later and I'm nearly to what I was hoping for. The body was near a total loss with all of the rust and holes and I nearly threw in the towel but I know I had a lot of time to work on it and dad taught me how to metal fab as a kid. I like to do everything myself and I like to read so I learned all of the "how to" as the project progressed. The only thing I wish I would have left to a pro was the paint. Not that the paint did not turn out good, I just got tire of all the trial and error until I figured it out. I think I probably painted the equivalent of about 5 of these things : ( A small list of what I have done: power steering, GM tilt wheel. electric/leather front seats out of a Dodge, 86 landcruiser engine and 4 speed, '86 knuckles and power disc brakes, 1972 Breath Green paint, new weather strip all around. I have touched every component along the way (frame off) and either replaced, rebuilt or refurbished. I don't know if I could be any happier with it, My seven year old son loves going for rides, it drives like a dream, stops on a dime, and breaks the tires loose at every green light.......OK the last part was not entirely true : )
