I may pull the trigger, you still happy with yours? Still recommend lots of tape
Absolutely, I hated the wood. This is better in the winter also, not nearly as cold now with the wood covered up.

And yes I used a good amount of tape before sewing it closed.

Follow up post... I removed my Loncky wrap to move it to another steering wheel (a loaner that had some damage).

When removing the Loncky cover there were spots where the double sided adhesive tape caused tearing of the outer layer of leather on the stock steering wheel.

I don't care much since the reason I removed it is to refinish the steering wheel, but it is something for future installers to consider.

Also, when I installed the wrap this time, I did it outside the vehicle with the steering wheel detached. It was a lot easier to stitch. Like twice as easy... It was also a lot nicer doing it in my comfy chair in the living room. :)

One thing I like to do before disconnecting the battery is to run the drivers seat all the way back and down to make room to work.

Fantastic.. i should have googled( IH8MUD) .. but thank you for replying and sharing the thread you have written. Do I disconnect only the negative terminal or both? Any other tips on handling the airbag? Google answers are scary pertaining to removal of steering wheel with airbag :)

I only disconnect the ground at the battery negative post.

Let it sit disconnected for a while. The FSM has a time listed, but I give it 10-15 minutes as I gather tools and organize. Once you do that, you don't have to worry about accidental discharge.

I lke to put something over the negative battery terminal while I'm working, so if things get bumped, the loose ground cable doesn't make unintended contact with the battery terminal. A thick shop rag, microfiber cloth, rubber sheet, tennis ball with a slit in it, whatever is handy.

Great. I will do that. Just for clarification.. you are not disconnecting the ground cable mounted to the body? You are only disconnecting from the battery, right? Thanks.

Correct.

Got it installed. Thank you for your help. It turned out really good. Not perfect but very good. The steering wheel feels little thicker and heavier than the OEM. Could it feel heavy if I have overtighten the wheel nut?
In the process I managed to brake one of the hooks for the switch assembly, it snaps in to the steering wheel ( pic below). It was tricky for me to pull it out without breaking it. From the looks of it, it might be possible just to get the cover plate - without buying the complete switch assembly. I looked for it on Toyota but could not find the right part..... if any of you know the part number please share, I would like to replace it. Once all was done, I put everything back together, took for a test drive and seems like all is in place. I was/am afraid that if anything is not placed correctly then it might set off the airbag. I hope that never happens, 🤞. Thank you all for your help, especially @CharlieS.

Congrats! I wouldn't worry about the missing clip. The screw holds it tight to the wheel. The tightness of the steering shaft nut won't impact steering effort. It is a tapered fit, and won't go any deeper than the interference allows. You could potentially have issues with the trim plastic rubbing against the clamshell, if everything isn't snapped in but that is likely to be more of a rubbing issue, rather than a steering effort issue.

Thanks. I double checked and do not feel or hear any plastic rubbing . I also double checked all the connections for the airbag are in place and secured.. I did not remember if I had pushed those tiny clips in for the airbag connectors or not.. .. gives me bit of comfort that those are in place. Thank you for guiding me.

I just completed this mod and wanted to share some pictures to help anyone who is also considering this for their worn out steering wheel.

I HIGHLY recommend partial disassembly of the steering wheel accessories in order to give you more room to work and move material around. IMO helped considerably.

Photos below show the locations of the main screws to be removed. 2x for airbag and 1x per side for the wheel controls. The controls pull out straight toward driver.

NOTE: please disconnect your battery for 15 mins before messing with the airbag

Once everything is loose or removed, The cover panels are easily manipulated to tuck the leather behind.

Slow and steady wins this job with the tedious job of stitching around. I started at the 6 o’clock position and worked up on the RH side (toward the 3 o’clock direction) then back on the LH side (toward the 9 o’clock direction). And then kept on from 9 in a clockwise direction to complete the stitching on the top portion of the wheel.

I used the double sided tape they provided with the kit. Others have said they can’t see if feel it, but if you look closely, you can see the outline of the tape through the leather cover. I’m sure I’ll get over it, but wanted to share.

I used tape on the front and back of the cover to hold it in place. I still have lots left over.

Also, I have A LOT of thread still left over after the project was done. Rather too much material over too little.

Hope these photos help anyone considering the mod!

Update on the steering wheel: my OCD wouldn’t allow me to live with the imprints of the double sided tape indentions on the top front of the steering wheel. My thumbs kept on messing with them when I drove and I plain didn’t like it.

I figured if I plan to keep the 200 for a while, that I need to do it right the first time to my satisfaction.

So, I undid, removed out the double sided tape, and redid the top portion of the steering wheel today.

Because the double sided tape has a slight “foam” texture to it, and because it had been there a couple weeks now, I had to take the heat gun to massage the glue off.

I’m very interested in this as our 16 200 wheel is starting to wear disappointingly fast compared to the rest of the vehicle! Slightly off topic, but does anyone know if in row markets there was a steering wheel option Without wood? I know this would be a more costly option but that was my initial intent with the search that led me to this post. If not. Guess I’ll be tackling this soon as well!

Edit: looks like after I did some more looking there is a factory all leather wheel that became avail in 2020 hence me not finding it searching for 2016!
Part # is 45100-60A91-C0

Still undecided though at $750!
Thank you in advance,
Jeff

Yes sir - here's a write up on the fully leather wrapped steering wheel upgrade for the 2016-2021 Land Cruisers.

Steering Wheel Upgrade 16+ LC - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/steering-wheel-upgrade-16-lc.1307241/

I installed mine on my 2016 without issue and it's wearing in nicely.
