I feel your pain. I thought i had a perfect, non-wrecked truck according to carfax and dealer, but failing clear-coat later, removed the front fenders to realize they have been replaced. So my rig had been in a front end collision.

Yep - my carfax was clean as well. I checked my truck well - and didnt find the toyota sticker on the passenger door. The rest of the trucks panels all had the toyota sticker. I thought I was ok. Not so much. The paint does match - and I dont miss the lock since I have the keyless entry - so - no biggie...
Does the gate have the Toyota VIN sticker? Possibly a non-Toyota replacement part?

I had the same experience. My cruiser had an absolutely clean Carfax and background check. Once I pulled the flares it was obvious the passenger rear door was repainted and actually doesn't close completely flush with the body. Rear upper hatch has been repainted too. I'm starting to think Carfax is just a money racket.

I kinda' think so too. The more i talked to repair people the more i learned. Basically they could have not reported the accident and paid a friend to fix it for them. Then it would have never shown up on carfax. I guess the only real way to know if it's been wrecked (which i wasn't smart enough to look at when i first purchased the truck) is to look at the bolts holding the body paneling together. If it looks like they have had a wrench on them then it's probably been wrecked. panels not lining up is another good indication. I just looked at carfax and assumed it was good, not

Having just completed my second and hopefully final tour of duty in the auto industry, I can tell you that the ONLY reliable data being aggregated by CarFax is the DMV ownership records. IMO it would be a big mistake to interpret the absence of data (like accident history) as an indication that none exists. I have personally seen a dozen or so vehicles that have been seriously wrecked and no such wrecks showed up in their data. Its not just their fault...their sources (such as state DMVs) are spotty at best.
