Lock on rear gate

I sold my '96 S-10 pu to get my Cruiser. I owned it since new and in the 6 years I had been rear ended 3 times, and side swiped once. All four accidents I had professionally repaired by a body shop chosen by the insurance company. The rear endings were about $800 in repairs each time. The side swipe was over $3600 in repairs including a new DS outer bed panel, new DS outer door skin, new DS front fender, and painting the entire truck. When I sold it I was looking for a Cruiser so I had a carfax for 30 days, so I ran the Carfax on my P/U to give to potential buyers. NONE....not a SINGLE wreck was reported on the Carfax. I showed it to potential buyers then I showed them the stack of receipted that I had logged for all the accidents.

I also think the Carfax is nice...but deffinatly not the do all/end all for potential buyers. As ConcreteJungle said, look at the body bolts, there was lots of evidence on my P/U that a lot of body work had been done. Over spray on the under carriage also. Nothing beats a set of well trained human eyes.

I only used it to look at number of owners, mileage, etc. Accident damage has to be seen by the naked eye. I knew my truck had a new passenger side front door - but I didnt see any evidence of work around the door frame or anywhere underneath the truck (frame, floorpan, etc).

I opened up the tailgate last night and found no damage inside. I see the hole where the lock should be - but some crafty PO or bodyshop actually welded a small piece of metal over it - and even rustproofed it from the inside. The hole for the lock looks fibne - no damage.

It seems like someone didnt want a lock back there. Maybe they had too many break-ins? I dont know!

The liftgate lock has rarely worked on my rig.

no lock

I just came across this thread. My 97 cruiser also has no tailgate lock. I looked behind the handle trim peice and there's a metal plate tack welded over the hole and the linkage rod that should hook up to the lock is still in there. From the outside it looks great, but I can tell that the rear of the truck has been repainted, so the truck hatch has been repaired. It makes no sence. It would be less work to pop the lock in and hook up the linkage rod, then to weld a plate, bondo, and paint:confused:

Alright, you are all upsetting me! I had to paint the truck and I didn't think of getting rid of the rear door lock! I haven't used it in so long that it is stuck and I am afraid to try it again! It needs WD-40 real bad! Can anyone remind my why I need to have that thing? What is it there for?

Incase your battery dies and you need to let your dog out....:flipoff2: Silly:flamingo:

My Cruiser was totaled by my brother, and since we bought it back, it never got a salvage title. I don't know if there's anything on the carfax about it, but you would think a "totaled" vehicle should have a salvage title.

Oh, and that's really weird about the rear lock, have you looked inside to see what the deal is yet!? I'm guessing it has a nice dent right there that they were probably too lazy to pull out, so they just eliminated the lock.
