I'm new to the LandCruiser family and looking to lift my baby girl. She's a beautiful, near mint condition, FJ62. I dont want to go extreme, just enough to maybe clear 33s. Also, I am looking to re-gear the axles and was wondering what ratio would be needed. I was thinking 4.11s. Any help is appreciated!!

Thanks.

FJ 62 already has 4.11 gearing, and it would be hard to beat the Old Man Emu 2-3" lift for 33's. Just did this myself. Would stay as FAR away from Man-a-Fre though! Where you located?

Looks awfully like our neck of the woods doesnt it? I agree Old Man EMU would probably be your best bet for a lift that size.

I just did an Old Man Emu lift on my '88 (same color as yours). 2.5" heavy front and medium rear. I was concerned that it would lift the truck too hight but it really looks great and the ride is better.

It seemed like I had a hard time getting the parts from the dealer who got them from OME. Also, remember that you will need to deal with longer brake lines and stabilizers. Well worth it though.

x3 what they said...

It's more expensive, but arguably one of the best suspension systems for our 60 series. I got mine (for my 60) from Kurt at CruiserOutfitters, you'll find many of us trust him completely for advice and like to fork over our paychecks to him. ;)

also - liek everyone has said, you've already got the 4.11s, depending on your intended use, you could look at changing gears to like 4.56 or something - but be sure whatever you do syncs up with your intended use.

Thanks for the help. I was unaware of the gearing. As I said I'm new to the Yota family. Previously I was rock-crawling in a 96 Jeep Cherokee on 37s, locked and loaded with 4.88s in a 9inch rear and 44 front.

Welcome then.
I second the notion for Cruiser Outfitters, and yeah it looks like Oregon.

You guys make me nervous about my Man-a-fre springs. I like them but I don't have much to compare them too.

At least i got the Hell for Stout shocks and the rest of the lift kit from CCOT and SOR.

MD88Cruiser, x4 or wherever we're at re: OME and cruiseroutfitters. I did my 62 recently and even though I went with the ultimate package I think it was worth every penny. Also used MAF U-Bolt flip kit which is nice.

5280Hawk, don't be nervous about MAF springs they're fine and you will be too. People like me that spent the big bucks just like to justify our expenditures and be critical of anything else. :D

Not trying to hijack but along this line of running 33's which fit nicely with an OME lift is a question I'm pondering at the moment. With the stock 4:11's and 33's on a 62 what is the effect on performance? I'd like to hear real world experiences from 62 owners. I'm in CO so running up hills is a big deal and since the 62 is a dog in that situtaion already would 33's make it worse? Better?

you have 31's now, right?

so....good question red cruiser. :)

Although I've got a 60...the comparison is probably similar. I ran my 31's with 4.11s for a while before going with the 33's. I could notice a decent improvement when pulling up the long inclines on 93 toward Boulder. Like, I could keep up with traffic without trying to hit 75at the bottom of the hil so I'm doing 45 at the top. With the 33's...cruising was great at highway speeds - pulling the long hills on I70 to Vail, well....sucks. alot.

Off-road - I prefer the 33's.

so..what does that mean for you and your 62...i dunno... ;) just slap some different gears on there when you do the ARB lockers. (heh, heh, heh)

This is something that I've been thinking about too. I'm wondering what my 60 will look like with 31's on it after the OME lift. I've got near new tires already and don't want to have to ask the boss for more $$$ for tires too. She nearly flipped at the price of the springs.

Chris, can you post a pic of your 62 with 31's on it??

D'Aniamal looks like you can't get much more than 33's in the wheel wells with out doing a SOA.

my 60 with OME on it...

I don't think there's much difference between the 60/62 when lifted (although the AT, my weigh enough more...)

I have the OME Heavy/Heavy, 1.5" over stock front shackles, and +2.5" in the rear. (IIRC)

Hey Shawn, I thought hitting 75 at the bottom just to make it to the top was SOP with all 60 series. :frown:

So are you saying yours performed better on the hills? Heading to Vail always sucks but with 33's did it suck more or less?

ARB lockers? That's for you rich guys but I'll have a lockrite by this weekend. ;)

Just wondering about the 31 vs 33 because :princess: suggested it might be a good idea to get a new set of tires before heading to Moab :D

Its worse on the inclines. I went from stock 235/75/15 to 32x11.5x15, and the 62 is even more of a dog on inclines. The larger tire diameter decreases the effective gear ratio. Its better for highway cruising mileage but it sucks when trying to pull a hill or accelerate.

It also doesn't help that the larger tire size has also increased the unsprung weight.

Thanks Washpark, that's what I always believed and wanted to confirm. As I said I like my 31's, now I know to stick with them until I can afford to re-gear. ;)

Just a quick aside here: Just noticing that myself, CardinalFJ60, WashparkS4 and maybe even 5280Hawk are all in the Denver area. It would be nice to see you all on the trail some time.
