I‘m not sure how accurate this but Car Care Nut on Youtube stated that the reman Toyota/Lexus transmissions have all new internals. The only part re-used is the case.
Ha-ha! Hence the core exchange when getting another trans.

I bought this 2010 with 120K 3 years ago, now has 220K. No history of transmission work done. Dropped the pan, No metal, oil smells good, pan bolts were finger tight. Broke trans filter open then unfolded; metal partials enough to cover aberham's beard on a penny. Solenoid S3 and S1 bolts were hand tight and had a shiny wear mark where the head of the bolts were rubbing the solenoid mount tab, due to not being torqued. All Solenoids were debris free and had 11-15 ohms and worked when 12vs was applied. Put everything back together.

Going with new filter and fluid... then wait and see. My AAA membership is paid up.

Greetings all! Same story as everyone else! Bought a 2011 Lexus GX460 with 105k. Drive in warm conditions and amazing! Temps dropped here in CO and started throwing P2714 and P0761 after the first 5-10 minutes as it can’t shift past 3rd gear. If we pull over, erase the codes and restart, it’s like nothing ever happened. Super frustrating!!!!

Reading across all forums online for Lexus and Toyota and especially GX460s, seems like this is all a mystery and no one has an answer. A shop did test the solenoids and they were ok, we did get the fluid checked and replaced, so now it’s either replace small parts at a time or do the full swap…. We are keeping this one until it croaks, just sucks no one has info on it yet vs. replace.

We’ll update once we make a decision, but for now getting in the habit or the old erase engine codes and restart every morning. Super odd as to me, seems like it would be a fluid temp or pressure issue that needs to build up. Oh well.

Cheers!

I'd like to say "congrats" on your GX, but I may hold that till you run down your issues.
Is there anything that your doing that causes the codes to trip and is repeatable?

2012 GX460 which I purchased 2.5 yrs ago with 140k on it. Now 175k. Only problem was transmission would shift slowly when cold, 500 RPM higher.. Say 40 degrees or less on the temp..
No hx of transmission fluid changes ever. Maybe? probably not. I really want to change the fluid BUT Car Care Nut says no. No codes ever.
Car has remote start, so as I put my shoes on in the am I start and let car warm up for ? 3 minutes. Then absolutely everything is perfect. How 3 min can make that much of a difference is beyond me.

Still trying to get an idea of how many folks have changed there fluid for the first time, "late in life." How many "got away with it" and how many did not.
Thanks Brian
Please comment if you if you have changed at high miles.

I really like Car Care Nut but don't necessarily agree with his transmission fluid advice in that episode. Personally I'd change it! If you have some reservations, take a sample from the trans pan drain plug and send it to Blackstone for an oil analysis, which is only around $30. That will give you some indication of if the fluid is full of clutch particles and should be left alone.

My saga is earlier in the thread... Started getting codes at 168k with ZERO drivability issues. Changed the fluid three times with a short neighborhood drive in-between and it went south... QUICK. If I had it to do over again, I'd likely change the filter with each of the fluid changes but I'm not sure if that would have made any difference. Best of luck to you; they are awesome machines. IF my wife gets the LX she's always wanted, I'd be happy to give up my taco and take the GX.

And @Acrad - Yup! Those are the codes and nothing we are doing changes things. Worse when colder and always first thing in the morning. Once we clear the codes, everything is fine. Likely why resting the solenoids showed no issues.

2 Indy Toyota shops recommend to replace at $7300-7600, Lexus dealership $8400 and waiting on 2 transmission shops.

I have enough ATF fluid to do multiple drain and fills, but think at this point it is what it is and my wife is getting tired of resetting the codes every morning while taking the kids to school.

I’ll likely get a Lexus one shortly as they said perhaps 7-30 days out. We plan to keep another 400k as it’s a 2011 with only 112k on it now.

Would y’all suggest the external cooler mod? We don’t tow or wheel, it’s my wife’s school taxi.

Thanks all!

Oh my! Just saw this come up on FacePage… Worth a shot and not losing too much if tried…

On the post this user had done the fluid changes, filter, cleaning and replaced the solenoid. This was the last step that cleared them and they have not been on for a month.

I may give this a shot and still have a transmission shop check the filter, clean and replace the solenoids.

Worth noting that when the person in my last post replaced the solenoids, it did removed the solenoid error code. The speed sensor removed the other. 30 days and 1000 miles and no code for him.

Hoping that works for you. Make sure to let us know.
Will do!!!

So another interesting twist for those who are having this issue…. We’ve been able to not get the check engine lights or avoid it getting stuck in 3rd gear first thing in the morning IF we come to a stop, put it in manual shift and shift around 2200-2500 rpms through the gears as it accelerates. It only works from a stop and shifting like a manual. It will not work if you are cruising 20-30 and got to manual shifting and try to push it into 4th. Strange, but worth noting for this mystery issue.

Been dealing with this for months and found this avoids the CEL and issues at startup.

Here is a quick summary of everything I have learned in the past 6 months with a GREAT free temp fix (manual shifting).

Leaving the summary here and starting a new post in hopes of solving this thing and getting others who’ve fixed it to chime in.

SUMMARY

Lexus GX460 P2714 P0761 Collection of Info

Hey crew! I know many of us have been affected by this issue with some replacing their transmission at around 80-180k for $7-8k.

On all forums and groups this appears to be a mystery with pockets of info here and there. I’d like to collect all the info and hope others who properly fixed it WITHOUT buying a new transmission can let us know what the real issues is as normal Toyota dealers and Indy shops normal recommend replacing the solenoids and eventually the whole transmission.

Below is a summary of everything I have read over the past 6 months on this. Huge props to Castle CZ and Daniel Silver on FaceBook GX460 Repair group who both found a fix for $500-1500 to a FREE workaround by manual shifting.

Hope this helps folks out in our situation and eventually solves this thing!

Please post IF you have learned something new OR what the true fix was.

Cheers!

ISSUES
-First/Cold starts car will not shift from 3-4, throws codes P2714 and P0761 - Stuck Solenoids, check engine, VSC and 4LO come on. Happens in the first 5-15 minutes. Must pull over and erase codes.

TEMP FIXES
-Disconnect negative battery cable to reset codes once they flash, drives fine rest of day
-Buy a scan tool, pull over, erase codes, turn off, turn on and drives fine the rest of the day
-Tape up the dashboard and only drive 30 mph everyday

BETTER LONG TERM OPTION
-First/Cold starts - place car in manual shift in gear 1. Up shift around 2200-2600 rpms for the first 15 minutes. Then place in automatic for rest of the day. No codes or issues!
-This works! Beats pulling over everyday to reset codes and saves $8000
-This also appears to prove there is an issue with one or multiple sensors we can’t fully figure out yet

INITIALLY STEPS TO ADDRESS CODES
-Drain and fill transmission fluid
-Clean MAF and throttle body
-Unattached all electrical connectors related, clean and snugly connect back
-Replaced both speed sensors on the transmission part 894130C011
-Replace Solenoids
-Pray
-Take to a real good transmission shop to diagnose to properly fix and address
-Worst case = Manual shift the vehicle for the first 15 everyday OR spend $8000 on a new transmission

ULTIMATE FIX?
-Not fully known but Castle CZ fixed it with fluid, solenoids, MAF cleaning, throttle bottle cleaning and the Transmission Sensors replace
-I’ll be attempting all of the above except Solenoids to see how it goes, but manual shifting is saving me $8000 currently!

Wishing you the best of luck with doing everything, short of a new tranny. Hope it works out for you (and your wallet). 🤞

Hopefully you can get fixed for cheap but it shouldn't cost $8k to put a Lexus rebuilt AT in. Need to track down some old work orders to see how many hour job Lexus charges.

Current cost of a unit with reportedly "all new" internals but a re-used exterior case is $3375

I think it was quoted around 11 hours in previous post. Gonna check the CL thread as well. I have't check what shop rates are lately. Last I looked a few years back Lexus was $160/hour....but small shop I imagine all over the place

With all this info, I'm dragging this back to life because I've got 190k and about 5 fluid drain-fills at 180k, so fairly fresh fluid now (no history of previous fluid maint). No problems yet. But I have the filter, pan gasket, and fluid to do a final filter and fluid change. After reading these issues I'm thinking the best thing is to leave well enough alone? See how it goes? Or it doesn't matter and a fresh filter and fluid will only be good for it?

Not sure what you mean by, "... final filter and fluid change." Are you selling, don't think it'll last long enough to do another change or your done changing out filter and oil?

just meant that I'd have changed the filter and another 6 qt of new fluid so it'd be as fresh as I can get it. I plan on keeping it as long as possible.
I've only done the drain and fills and always felt like I should do the whole filter change.
