My 2007 FJ....getting it ready for another Rubicon trip! Upgrading with Nitro 4.88s, front air locker, and moving up to 35s from 295s

Do u have an update on the re-gear and tires? I currently have 295's on factory gears with front locker, but ready to upgrade. Trying to decide between Nitro 4:56 or 4:88's and will probably pull the trigger after Summit. Which 35's did u go with?

I know you didn't ask me but thought I'd chime in on this subject since I have some good experience...

I'd go with 4.88's if you plan on running 35's. Those gears brought mine very close to factory spec and feel when driving, just like it was off the showroom floor. Strong accelleration merging and reduced/eliminated kick-down when in cruise control.

In my opinion, the hard part is finding 35's that fit without having to add spacers or altering the fenders to accomodate them. I preferred going with 35 X 10.50's (I went with SS SSR's) instead of a 12.50 whose width caused issues, at least for me.

I had 33" SS SSR's and experienced sidewall failure and they were difficult to balance. Interco has also increased pricing about 25%, but boy are they great offroading.

Agreed, i had a full set "warantied" via Discount Tire due to chunking and losing lugs. Right now, Swampers are limited in availability and alternatives in a 35x10.50 are scarce.

I'm running KM2's on my 80 and love them...

Wilson, I thought you and your bad back were done with big tires. 4.88s seem like they would be too much for a BFG 35" (they run smaller). An Interco or Pitbull 35", maybe...I would worry about freeway gas milage as much as you travel around though. I run 4.56s with my 33" BFGs; however, tomorrow I am going with 34" BFGs.

I'd respectfully disagree that 4.88's being "too much". I initially had 255/85/16 SS TrXus tires when I regeared with 4.88's, having it done @Inchworm before I did Rubithon '08, then drove home to NC. Knowing this, I took very careful MPG measurements to CA and back to NC.

Strangely enough, I got better MPG's on the way home, not by a great deal but it was better. I put 35's on within a month of being home and MPG dropped through the floor with the nice, light and nimble Swamper SSR's.

I attributed the gain in MPG's as "driving downhill and with the wind", coming from CA to NC but all other things were the same, passengers, load, everything.

My last FJCS (5), I openly allowed anyone who called me out in the "blue room" for my statements how valued I felt regearing is if one is driving around on 35's, stating that it "didn't make that much difference" and "there is no need to regear". Nothing better to see their face and hear their comments after we got out of my 4.88 geared FJC.

In any event, I'd go at least 4.56's but know that one won't regret going with 4.88's IMHO...

I definately would never argue the benefits of regearing and as I do not have 4.88s, I can't definatively say 4.88s with 35s would hurt freeway MPG. It would be a concern to call out though. Would like to hear from more that have gone from 35s with 4.56s to 35s with 4.88s.

Yep its an XROX, it's made in Australia by Outback Accessories and looks better by far than any of the other options available here.

Just waiting and hoping that they will release a TRD supercharger!!

Yeah they make them for a variety of of popular vehicles here in Australia.

The lights are JDM fog lamps I got from MOT. I don't think he has any more available though, I've had these for several years.
