Preventative Maintenance.

The throttle cable from the firewall to the injection pump is frayed beyond repair and sticks. I guess after 20 years about 225,000 miles it's about due. A bushing at the end of the sleeve wore out and began fraying the cable. It stuck a little last fall but i thought it was due to the linkage part of the system, the fray was hidden inside the sleeve. I lubed everything up and the problem went away. So on the way back from campus yesterday it began sticking again. When i got back to the house I took a closer look and noticed the fray.

Oh well, it failed due to my negligence so I guess I’m to blame. Ralph Hayes can't get it for me unfortunately, so i have to get one from Canada. But the cruiser will likely be grounded until new part. :frown: i am going to try and make a temporary fix until then but it's not looking good.

*sigh*

So she didn't pass inspection because of that cable? That sucks. My truck almost didn't pass inspection last year because of the ebrake, it would't hold the vehicle. It's supposed to hold it at idle, but the guy would hit the gas and then say, "see, it's not holding" and theni would respond "see you are mashing the gas, it's not going to hold that way but it does hold at idle so slap a sticker on it" :)

no the cable just snapped, so i had no throttle.

BUT, its temporarily fixed with an old bicycle brake cable (thanks Malphrus for the donation) and an electrical connector. so at least i can drive it till the new part gets here.

WTG...you know what they say: "necessity is the mother of invention". :grinpimp:

The 60's air pump seized the other day in the driveway.
Good thing. I saved a belt and didn't have to resort to
the 'ol mother's panty hose fan belt invention. :princess:
I'm thinking about going 2nd alt this time.
Hey, JP, did you need a special bracket or could you
use the air pump bracket?
Any special alt type? Got part numbers? :grinpimp:
This is about the 3rd air pump to go south on me
and there is NO power steering leaking on the MoFawkers.
BAD design.
