I replaced our brake lights and turn Signals with Led bulbs from Auto Zone. Amber and Red. I could not find any white ones for the back up and Running lights? do they make them?

My Question is now the Blinkers "Blink" at warp speed? Do I need the resistor that they sell with the LED's to make them blink at a normal speed?

All help is appreciated.

Thanks, N

Instead of buying a resistor to 'burn' extra current, just buy an electronic flasher (needs to be the right pinout for your vehicle). The electronic flashers don't rely on the incandescent bulb resistance to operate and so will work just fine with LEDs.

Superbrightleds has a variety of tail light, brake light, reverse light LED 'bulbs' in all colours including white.

Of course the legality of running LEDs in the vehicle external light fixtures is an issue...

cheers,
george.

Electronic flasher works great. And what do you mean the legality? Shouldn't have any issues, I run led exterior bulbs on everything (except headlights of course).

Changing the exterior lights (turn indicators, brakes, reverse lights, running lights) and NOT using the original bulb is basically illegal. The light pattern for those lights is based on the reflector design and assumes a filament based bulb to work correctly. Ditto for the amount of light being output.

Obviously modern vehicles that come equipped with LED indicators have light fixtures designed to use the LEDs (most often an array of LEDs). Older vehicles or ones that came with an incandescent bulb do not generally handle a LED 'bulb' well since the light pattern from a LED (even an array) is nothing like that from an incandescent filament.

Most folk don't realise that all these vendors selling exterior LED replacement 'bulbs' are essentially providing non DOT approved light solutions. It obviously is in the vendors best interest (so they can sell their solutions) to NOT inform you or hide the information away in a corner of their website.

Example:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/carbulb_notes.php

Read the bottom disclaimer, which I quote here:

"For aftermarket use. May not comply with SAE or U.S. DOT standards
Warranty void if used in applications other than standard automotive replacement bulbs
All product specifications are subject to change without notice"

Note the somewhat subtle "may not comply with SAE or U.S. DOT standards".... It can be pretty well guaranteed they don't comply.

Anyhow, in general most highway patrol/policemen will ignore it - just like they ignore most of the totally illegal HID retrofits. It's still illegal though... That's why I wrote what I did in the 2nd post. It is also why I never made and LED based exterior lights when I was selling dome modules etc for 80's and 100's - I did not want to get into the whole legality issue if/when an accident occurs and some over-active lawyer/vehicle-insurance-company decides to go through things with a fine comb.

Anyhow, just thought I'd at least make folk aware of SAE/DOT legality, do as you will...

cheers,
george.

Good debate, the LED bulbs do not light up the Reflectors as well as a bulb. They look good from behind but are dim from the sides. I am thinking about going back to a super white bulb. Thoughts?

There are many different designs of LED bulbs. You can have the LED's on the tip, sides, both, etc. This selection will be useful depending on the type of reflector used in the fixture. It will require some homework and research to determine the best application. Don't just rely on your vehicle make/model/year to find the best answer. And the AZ's near me don't sell anything I'd want to use in this topic.

I bought an electronic flasher off ebay...can't remember where I posted it. It works fine, although I have yet to change any of my bulbs to LED yet. The pinout was reversed from the the original, but so simple to just hook up your own wiring to the original flasher relay socket.

**here's the thread where i talked about the relay. **

I would beware of retail-bought LED replacements. The high-power ones off superbrightleds.com, etc will be just fine for most types of lamp housings, but the dimmer ones do not throw enough light in the daytime. Before you go drive around, do an honest comparison next to an unmodified vehicle and make sure your brake/signal lights are at least as visible as a normal OEM bulb.

Has anyone seen/tried the LED Bulbs that resemble their Incadescent replacements, they look like they have a single LED and are encased In a glass/plastic bulb just like a normal Incadescent 1156/1157 and of course they come In colors to match the lenses In different uses. Superbrightled's Sell them and they are not expensive at $12.95 each. These seem to me a very good choice because they are rated not overly bright, which I think would give you the benefits of LED like Instant on-off and the overall look of LED's. I am going to soon convert my 1991 Cressida to these bulbs but I was hoping to find someone with a little expierience and maybe some pics of their setup, or even some before and after findings. When I do I will do an all out compare!

I have lots of different bulbs from SuperBright in a few vehicles. I think the only single-bulb model I have is a reverse light, though. What model # are you talking about?

And keep in mind that most of their bulbs are offered in various brightness levels.

On their website It Is bulbs 1156-X1W-G and 1157-X1W-G. Here are a couple of pics

Nobody has used these? I agree that these are the lower powered ones and that Is why I think these would be Ideal for a replacement because they are not"overkill"

Looks like they'll save a few bucks and only be slightly lower output. Be sure to match the bulb color to the lens color or they'll wash out. I'd still suggest using a much brighter bulb for reverse lights. Please report back if you get these.

Yeah that Is kinda the look I am after "LED but not overkill" I have the Pfran Reverse lights on my 97' Cruiser and love them and the reverse lights on the Cressida really suck! I guess part of that Is I am spoiled on the Pfran LED's on the Cruiser. Anyway I will use the Pfran superbright ones for reverse.
