Wow that’s wild - first I’ve heard of an issue with KDSS. What was the $ damage?

Woohoo! I’m first. Maybe that’s why they had to manufacture the part “back east”. It was $1131 for the part, $25 for fluid, and $750 for labor.

Was it covered under warranty?

Man, I was feeling bad about my liftgate actuator kicking the bucket this week, but it’s small potatoes compared to you guys @Taco2Cruiser @DRCocaCola

They say bad things come in threes, so here’s hoping no one else has issues before the trip🤞🏻

Is this a good place to talk Comms for this trip or should I start a new thread?

I am going to buy a radio and I am trying to figure out what the best thing to do. In preparation for this trip, I got my HAM license. Browsing around this forum, there still seems to be an inconsistency on what is the "official" method of communication for these trail runs. Seems HAM is preferred, but not going to be 100%. I am signed up for the Poughkeepsie run on Sunday and it says "trail comms - FRS" so I assume that we won't have HAM on that run. All runs seems to have both FRS and HAM frequencies listed. Should I get two radios? Will I have both of them going at the same time? Will the trail leader be using both? Will some on the trail be doing one and some another? I have never done these group runs before so I am looking for some help.

Any advice on what those of us new to radios and group runs should do? I am a bit lost on what the best course of action is.

Sorry for being too lazy to read through 37 pages and for having a bad memory. Anyone planning a pre-trip coming from the west coast? My daughter and I are trying to decide between a highway/hotel run versus full on camping and dirt trails. Heat will be a factor in late July so camping is less than appealing unless we go through northern AZ.

If you have HAM, definitely bring it. Most trails will include people with either or both. HAM is just so much clearer and the range usually much better....even if just to officially listen in.

I know in my case, I’ll have both HAM and FRS, and will have a few handheld HAMs other group members can use to monitor on. I will try to relay over FRS too, but when Trail groups stretch out or around corners, etc signal drops quickly on either but especially FRS.

Non-LCDC aside:
Personally I think it’s a good idea to have several ways to reach out when problems happen, so I have HAM, FRS, CB and even my aircraft radio since I often travel alone and you never know how you might find immediate/local help. I also have an inReach, but that doesn’t necessarily get you in touch with random locals in a pinch.

Hey brother, I’m the trail leader for that one and the reason that run says FRS is because I don’t have a HAM license or a HAM radio.

Now there is no reason we can’t have a HAM radios among the group. I just figured that since I didn’t have one, to make easy, just say FRS.

But whatever the group wants to do, I will accommodate as it’s not about me, but the group having a great time. If people want a heavier comms plan, then we can do that.

I’m not a big fan of a heavy comms plan when it comes to off roading for fun, so I generally don’t worry about it as much. But that’s me, and that’s not the right answer for everyone, so I think this is the perfect forum to talk about it. Because it may help other groups decide what they want to do.

Got this from facebook it was posted 3 hrs ago...

TRAIL UPDATE !!!! :)

Whew!!!! I'm 36hrs late! Been getting stuff done around the house, Lol.

I can safely say that we are getting cheated out of the thunderstorms here in town. It looks like they are raining pretty good up on the mountains and Montrose got hammered yesterday! Flooding on Main St. and I saw a picture of a large tree branch landing on a car. Thank you to Deb for sharing those! :)

Perhaps I need to start washing the SUV's in the driveway. Then it'll rain properly. Ha!

There are just a few changes to the trail conditions, although the county crews are still working their asses off for sure. BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE and HUGE Thank You to them all! :)

There have been reports of people going past the ROAD CLOSED signs and then the crews have to halt their work until it's clear. For your safety AND theirs, ROAD CLOSED means the road is CLOSED...DO NOT ENTER OR PASS...do not go past the sign in any way, shape, or form. DO NOT go around barricades, road closed signs or equipment NO MATTER WHAT! Even if to you the road appears fine at that point, closures are in place for a reason. DO NOT move road closure signs. If you are caught you will be charged. DO NOT drive up to crews and equipment working on the road and wait to get around. Don't try to talk to the crews while they are working. Go back down the pass and let them do their work. DO NOT, FOR ANY REASON, drive off the road or trail on to the tundra. This is against the law.

The snow is still continuing to melt more and more and as it does, the trails are opening up more and more trees are being discovered. Be safe out there!

Keep in mind....it doesn't take a drought to create a forest fire. Even though we have had lots of snow and moisture, ALWAYS be aware of anything that can start a forest fire.

The bears are definitely awake and lookin around for food. Watch out for the mountain lions too. I'm also hearing that there is a lot of moose this year, so please be careful and always ALWAYS keep your distance from the animals. Let the wildlife be wild and use the zoom on your camera. That's what it's there for. 100 yards is a very good rule of thumb. Any closer and you risk your safety AND the animal's. I, myself, had another bear visitor this week too :) Evidently he was looking for birdfeeders and thought my yard lanterns were some. He took a try at the birdseed and didn't seem to like it too much.

KEEP IN MIND!!! The water flow in each of the creeks and rivers is fluctuating A LOT! One moment they can be running normal and then the next minute, they can be SERIOUSLY FLOWING! And that doesn't include the possibility of flash flooding.

REMEMBER: VEHICLES GOING UPHILL HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!!!

ANIMAS FORKS - San Juan County - Semi-Open. They are currently working on the large slide between Eureka and Animas Forks, but please...please please PLEASE...give the county crews room to work. There have been reports of people going past the road closed signs and then the crews have to halt their work until it's clear. For your safety AND theirs, road closed means road closed...do not enter...do not go past the sign in any way, shape, or form. Eureka up to the Toltecs, but if they are still working on it, then please make sure that you are not in the way of the dozer crews. It's going to be a while for the area from Eureka to Animas Forks to be opened. HUGE Slide there! You can get to Animas Forks by way of California Gulch and Hurricane Pass now, but you may have to turn around and go back that way. County Road 2 had some major flooding and they built a temporary single lane, but I wouldn't take a large camper back there. Definitely watch out for the flooding and runoff. It's no joke this year! Don't risk it.

GLADSTONE - San Juan County - I'm trying to find out if this one is actually officially open now. I think it is.

KENDALL MTN - San Juan County - The snow is melting away but be extra careful in the spots where the snow is still there and the road tilts outward. We don't want you sliding down off the mountain! Titusville is still snowed in. Deer Park is most likely still snowed in. EXTREME CAUTION ADVISED

ENGINEER PASS - Ouray County - Currently in progress and you may be able to get up it a little bit, but remember to stay out of the way of the county crews and give them room to work as well as in case of an emergency. They came up against a LOT of debris from avalanches and it's going to take some time clearing it.

CINNAMON PASS/COUNTY ROAD 30 - Hinsdale County - Open to Burrows Park; access to Silver Creek, Cooper Lake and Grizzly Gulch to Redcloud and Sunshine Peaks. Cinnamon Pass is NOT OPEN to the summit on the Hindsdale County side. It will hopefully be opened the first part of this week.

BROWN MOUNTAIN GULCH - San Juan County - I'm still thinking CLOSED. Due to the delayed openings of the more popular trails, but you might be able to get up it a little ways.

Blue Lakes Update

GMUG wilderness rangers discovered extensive avalanche debris at mile 1.7 on the Blue Lakes Trail. Finding the trail across the debris is extremely difficult and is not recommended.

Wilderness rangers have placed orange flagging tape at the re-connection point of the trial. If you do attempt the trail it is suggested to stay up high as you cross the debris field and locate orange flagging tape placed in trees as location points.

The lake has 2 feet of snow on it and is frozen. Camping at this time is not suggested due to the conditions.

Spring snow is packed and very slick, snowshoes are not required but poles and shoe traction “yak trax” are highly advised.

BLACK BEAR PASS - CLOSED Due to the heavy, late snows San Miguel County is not going to be able to start clearing the high mountain passes as early as usual. Plans are to begin Ophir Pass mid-June, followed by Imogene and then Black Bear.

I saw this update on Facebook as well, but it's frustrating the BBP info seems very outdated. I think it's been the same "update" for about 6 weeks now even though Ophir appears to have been fully opened at least a week ago. I think it will be down to the wire whether we can run BBP. I am leading the first group on it Thursday morning of LCDC, so we should be prepared for "early season" conditions if it's open for us!

I'm bringing my hiking gear and snowshoes to stay busy incase bbp and imogene (2 of my 3) are closed. I don't know how keen I am doing the steps and switchbacks as the first group. We'll see.

I'll be prerunning all the trails I'm leading about four days prior and Black Bear is one of them. So no worries. Besides, you know when you feel most alive is right?

I saw a note that some sites at Ampitheater Campground are closed due to tree hazards. Anyone happen to know ones? Most importantly for me, is site 004 open? I can't seem to find a list anywhere, and I'd hate to arrive and not have a place to stay

Update: Finally got a hold of someone in the local ranger district and she said she'd been up there recently and all the sites are open

I made a backup plan if the campground doesnt have an opening Saturday night. I made a reservation at the Hampden Inn in Montrose. So we will be able to enjoy the Slee dinner this year.

Good thing I checked, I made this reservation in October and who knows what I was thinking then :) Probably miss the traffic going home

Backup plan canceled. I now am good at the campground through Sunday Aug 4th
