TRAIL UPDATE !!!!
Whew!!!! I'm 36hrs late! Been getting stuff done around the house, Lol.
I can safely say that we are getting cheated out of the thunderstorms here in town. It looks like they are raining pretty good up on the mountains and Montrose got hammered yesterday! Flooding on Main St. and I saw a picture of a large tree branch landing on a car. Thank you to Deb for sharing those!
Perhaps I need to start washing the SUV's in the driveway. Then it'll rain properly. Ha!
There are just a few changes to the trail conditions, although the county crews are still working their asses off for sure. BIG ROUND OF APPLAUSE and HUGE Thank You to them all!
There have been reports of people going past the ROAD CLOSED signs and then the crews have to halt their work until it's clear. For your safety AND theirs, ROAD CLOSED means the road is CLOSED...DO NOT ENTER OR PASS...do not go past the sign in any way, shape, or form. DO NOT go around barricades, road closed signs or equipment NO MATTER WHAT! Even if to you the road appears fine at that point, closures are in place for a reason. DO NOT move road closure signs. If you are caught you will be charged. DO NOT drive up to crews and equipment working on the road and wait to get around. Don't try to talk to the crews while they are working. Go back down the pass and let them do their work. DO NOT, FOR ANY REASON, drive off the road or trail on to the tundra. This is against the law.
The snow is still continuing to melt more and more and as it does, the trails are opening up more and more trees are being discovered. Be safe out there!
Keep in mind....it doesn't take a drought to create a forest fire. Even though we have had lots of snow and moisture, ALWAYS be aware of anything that can start a forest fire.
The bears are definitely awake and lookin around for food. Watch out for the mountain lions too. I'm also hearing that there is a lot of moose this year, so please be careful and always ALWAYS keep your distance from the animals. Let the wildlife be wild and use the zoom on your camera. That's what it's there for. 100 yards is a very good rule of thumb. Any closer and you risk your safety AND the animal's. I, myself, had another bear visitor this week too

Evidently he was looking for birdfeeders and thought my yard lanterns were some. He took a try at the birdseed and didn't seem to like it too much.
KEEP IN MIND!!! The water flow in each of the creeks and rivers is fluctuating A LOT! One moment they can be running normal and then the next minute, they can be SERIOUSLY FLOWING! And that doesn't include the possibility of flash flooding.
REMEMBER: VEHICLES GOING UPHILL HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY!!!

ANIMAS FORKS - San Juan County - Semi-Open. They are currently working on the large slide between Eureka and Animas Forks, but please...please please PLEASE...give the county crews room to work. There have been reports of people going past the road closed signs and then the crews have to halt their work until it's clear. For your safety AND theirs, road closed means road closed...do not enter...do not go past the sign in any way, shape, or form. Eureka up to the Toltecs, but if they are still working on it, then please make sure that you are not in the way of the dozer crews. It's going to be a while for the area from Eureka to Animas Forks to be opened. HUGE Slide there! You can get to Animas Forks by way of California Gulch and Hurricane Pass now, but you may have to turn around and go back that way. County Road 2 had some major flooding and they built a temporary single lane, but I wouldn't take a large camper back there. Definitely watch out for the flooding and runoff. It's no joke this year! Don't risk it.
GLADSTONE - San Juan County - I'm trying to find out if this one is actually officially open now. I think it is.
KENDALL MTN - San Juan County - The snow is melting away but be extra careful in the spots where the snow is still there and the road tilts outward. We don't want you sliding down off the mountain! Titusville is still snowed in. Deer Park is most likely still snowed in. EXTREME CAUTION ADVISED
ENGINEER PASS - Ouray County - Currently in progress and you may be able to get up it a little bit, but remember to stay out of the way of the county crews and give them room to work as well as in case of an emergency. They came up against a LOT of debris from avalanches and it's going to take some time clearing it.
CINNAMON PASS/COUNTY ROAD 30 - Hinsdale County - Open to Burrows Park; access to Silver Creek, Cooper Lake and Grizzly Gulch to Redcloud and Sunshine Peaks. Cinnamon Pass is NOT OPEN to the summit on the Hindsdale County side. It will hopefully be opened the first part of this week.

COTTONWOOD CREEK/COUNTY ROADS 30 & 35 - Hinsdale County - Limited travel due to downed trees

PANDORA - San Juan County - Semi-open to a little ways past the campground up to the quarry.
TERRY TUNNEL ROAD - San Juan County - Open a little ways. Still lots of debris up that way.
OLD LIME CREEK - No word yet, but I'm thinking open
BROWN MOUNTAIN GULCH - San Juan County - I'm still thinking CLOSED. Due to the delayed openings of the more popular trails, but you might be able to get up it a little ways.

Blue Lakes Update
GMUG wilderness rangers discovered extensive avalanche debris at mile 1.7 on the Blue Lakes Trail. Finding the trail across the debris is extremely difficult and is not recommended.
Wilderness rangers have placed orange flagging tape at the re-connection point of the trial. If you do attempt the trail it is suggested to stay up high as you cross the debris field and locate orange flagging tape placed in trees as location points.
The lake has 2 feet of snow on it and is frozen. Camping at this time is not suggested due to the conditions.
Spring snow is packed and very slick, snowshoes are not required but poles and shoe traction “yak trax” are highly advised.
