Alright. So there is this little rich kid at school who is trying to tell me his dad 2003 Range Rover( Westminster edition, like it means somethin) is better than our 1994 FJ80 with lockers. I told him he is wrong and we would have to test this out if he doesnt mind getting the rover dirty. Does the rover have anything going for it?

Not a thing.

British cars DO NOT break down, they "fail to proceed" ;)

Get the guy to go out with you and take some pics. While the Rover is capable he shouldn't be able to hang with you.

I am only young and dont know a whole lot of technical stuff about cruiser but i dont know the lockers are what make 80s so great. but personally i think a nonlocked 80 would stay with the rover

Before you get to talkin' make sure you know what your talkin' about first...this goes with everything in life.

It has Independent front and rear suspension in the 2003s, correct? If so, independent suspension unless driving on the street or racing at ridiculous speeds in Baja with heavy modifications generally mean resitricted wheel travel meaning less articulation meaning less traction.

Petrol RR right? Over the long haul (can't be tested between you two no doubt) that V8 won't last the fight. Lockers are great, but the suspension and ground clearance differences alone on the RR vs. the LC will make the LC shine.

A 2003 RR will only just begin leaking so you can't claim that one yet.

Rover would have a BIG chance of winning my business some year if they take some drastic chnages, but it just ain't gonna happen.

82 FJ40, 4inch lift, warn winch, 33's(98k miles)
85 FJ60(290k miles) stock
85 FJ60(95k miles) Warn winch
94 FJ80(210k miles) stocked, locked, and loaded
00 UZJ 100 series, stock 60k miles
00 Chevy 2500 HD

No offense, but WOW on the number of Cruisers! Can I say `jealous?' Sounds like there's no lack of $$ over there! :o

Just a thought here but how bout I take the range rover and you take mom and pa's lc and we go out back and duke it out. chances are I would spank you in the rover not cause its a better rig but im old and cautious and I think I oculd take a young whippersnapper like you in a heart beat (please read the sarcasm here)
We all know the shortcomings of the rovers no need to beat them up to feel superior. it all comes down to driving ability. vehicles be damned the one who knows the terrain better could kick both of your arses in a suzuki.

I think the real question here is... can your dad, beat up his dad?

Just make comments about his Buick like I do with my co-worker who owns a 02 Disco! I believe they use an old buick motor/block.

IIRC, the new RR uses a BMW designed V8. The Buick comments may make you sound stupid...

The guy who owns it says its a buick motor, so it makes him stupid! Although he had a D1 version too.

I believe that the D1 and D2 do use a Buick derived motor, but the new ('03+) Range Rover uses the BMW motor.

If insult was taken, it was not meant.

I think it also depends on what 'better' you are talking about. I would think that if 'better' = luxury, the new RR would be better. Off road, I would go for the TLC, but I completely agree with the person behind the wheel comment being critical.

I have wheeled with an older (2000?) RR and they seem perfectly (surprisingly) fine, but not better. The new RR probably has air lift suspension which gives some reasonable travel (but is problematic if it is broken) and electronic traction control (see earlier post on this) - most people would be surprised at what they (RR) can do. I also agree with the comment that the ground clearance is likely a huge issue (the RR and Disco IIs often have air dams that can be torn off).

Cheers, Hugh

Phaedrus, No offense taken about your comment. i agree with what you said. I can totally see a dumb young kid making a bad move which in turn could lead an experienced driver to win in something like this. The kid seems to think the push button air lift on the things make it the greatest thing ever. Also, while we are on the discussion of discoveries, a girl in the same class believes her mom 99 disco could take the cruiser...what a shame. Nevertheless thanks for all your opinions. One more question, What do you guys think is the best suv off-road. Hummer? G -wagon? TLC?
