Hi all,

I have a 1993 KZJ78 Land Cruiser Prado that I imported a few months ago. Come to find out, the transfer case is destroyed. On the hunt to find a transfer case that won’t break my bank or do a full transmission swap.

All i’ve been finding and hearing is that an A343F is the only transmission recommended (hard to find too).

Any insight?

What’s wrong with your transfer case?

photos attached from my mechanic! Went in for a blown seal, they noticed 2 bolts were inside the transfer case, once they opened it up this is what they said they found!

What exactly did the shop tell you?
That I need a whole new transfer case.

Went in to change out the seal they believed was blown, when they pulled it down to change the seal they stated there were 2 bolts in the transfer case housing so they had to take that apart. After they took it apart, I got a call that the transfer case is „destroyed and I’ll need a new one“

Please get a bunch of pictures of the transfer case itself. I’d love to see them. I’m happy to help but I wanna make sure we have all the right information so you get the right parts.

Man, thank you so much for your help!! I’ll call the shop in the morning as they’re closed currently and ask them if they will get some photos.

But the truck is currently at Auto Shop Services in Myrtle Beach, SC.

I have a few complete rebuildable vacuum shift case cores here in Orlando however as Georg said that is your transmission extension housing, not the transfer case, way more pictures/explanation needed.

I see ZERO damage to the Tcase.

However, the bearing in the transmission rear extension housing let go. Looks like the bearing bore in that housing may be damaged so it might have to be replaced.

How many miles are on these? Tcase will need to be rebuilt for sure. Did the transmission make any noise or have any shifting issues?

Is the shop capable of doing the trans/Tcase work and experienced enough to do so?

We’re happy to help …… can supply parts and tech support and if need be, we can rebuild the units for you.

I'm with Georg. Looks like a completely rebuildable transfer-case. As much as I would love to sell you a new vacuum shift case (Part# TC36112), you don't need it :D

Here’s what I see and my conclusions after talking to the owner today; had a great conversation and they sound like really nice people.

Vehicle has 180k miles on it. Automatic transmission started acting up. Turns out it was low on fluid but no external leaks.
Given how clean the inside of that Tcase is, I’m willing to be that ATF was being pushed into the Tcase causing the trans to slip.
The trans output shaft support bearing had a cage failure. The steel shrapnel/parts from that cage ended up in the oiler portion of the front half of the split case.
If the trans rear extension housing is ok, then all that’s needed is a new support bearing and a Tcase rebuild kit.
As mentioned during our conversation, we have both items in stock.

I am a little concerned by the shops “findings” and their assessment of the situation as well as what they think is needed to get this cruiser back on the road.

Hey all that are following, update! We pulled it from the initial shop because they didn’t know what they were doing. I was able to get some more photos of the transfer case that is completely disassembled in the back of the truck. The current shop it is at isn’t sure if they can rebuild because of all the pieces it’s in.

@orangefj45 whatcha think?

This truck ended up getting shipped down to my shop, as noted T-case was completely fine besides bearings showing some normal putting from mileage.
Replaced the support bearing and O-ring, and rebuilding the T-case with fresh bearings. Also replacing the input gear with a long-spline unit for maximum longevity.

I mic’d the transmission output housing and elected to continue using it as there isn’t thrust load on that area. It was deburred and I will drop some retaining compound in there on reassembly.

Crossing fingers that the transmission is ok with fresh and correct fluid.
