Interesting, I got led housings on Amazon and they fit just fine. I did, however, have to get a relay for them because of the negative switching. They were inexpensive and easy to wire in as well. This is in my 95 kzj78 Prado. I can take pictures tomorrow of the lights and the harnesses after work.Living in a deer infested area I've gotten tired of the dim sealed beam headlights and am looking to upgrade. I took advantage of a black friday deal on a pair of LED headlights, but upon trying to install them I discovered that the Prado headlight bucket tapers too much for most of the off-brand LED headlights in this size.
H4 conversion housings seem to be the next best option, there are several available with glass lenses for a decent price, and will take either regular halogens or LED conversion bulbs. One thing that I am curious about for those that have converted to an H4 style bulb, whether it be halogen or LED: did you have to use an aftermarket harness to get around the negative switching Toyota used? Is the wiring different on Prados that came with the stock H4 housings?
That would be great. From what I can tell most of the cheap 5x7 LED headlights are fairly deep and do not taper much. No worries. Mine were around the hundred dollar mark and didn't have an issue with fitment. I might still have a spare set of relays if you're located in Canada. That is a very valid point. If it's wet "elephant snot" snow it definitely sticks to the lens. If it's cold winter snow like we typically have in the Rockies it's not a concern. They do make ones with heater filament in the lens. That's what I'd get next time.Thanks for the input everyone. I have decided to get a set of H4 conversion housings so I can run either H4 bulbs or LEDs. I have read that many LED headlights don't make enough heat to melt off snow in the wintertime, something that is definitely a concern where I live. Thinking I will try LED bulbs, but still have the option to switch to halogens during the winter if that is necessary. I have an H4 harness already, purchased to use with the LED headlights that didn't fit.
Your comment about the defroster not being able to keep up hits home haha. I'm going to duct tape all of my joints in my HVAC to hopefully help get some more air on the screen.There have been a few times driving in extremely cold temperatures with snow or in freezing rain where even my sealed beams will start to ice up. Couple that with the defroster not being able to keep up makes for some unpleasant driving experiences.
Looking up headlight parts for my frame number the only option is a Koito housing with an HB2 bulb, no sealed beam units shown. How does the stock wiring handle that with Toyota's negative switching? I was under the impression that H4 or HB2 bulbs would not work with the stock wiring/switching.
