G'day All,

I lashed out & bought myself a set of 36" Simex Extreme Trekker II's for the 40. Cut the Guards, Bolt em up & away I go I thought - Wrong.

First up I had to get a new Rear Bar made up because the OEM couldn't handle the weight. Next I had to swap out the the Lokka for an ARB Locker to match the one in the front to stop the Tyres chewing out the driveway.

After taking the 40 out for a wheel I discovered that the big Pede's don't really start to do their thing until they're below 10 psi so next up was getting a set of beadlock rims. Finally I thought it best to fit disc brakes to the rear to help stop these rather heavy wheels.

We went out for wheel to Big Pats Creek on Saturday & I must admit it was worth the hassle.

I guess it's just a reminder that modifying your 40 is rarely as straight forward as it seems

Cheers,
Matty

Mate,

What's your rig's gearing?

I will also slap in a set of 36" 'pede on mine this week.

cheers!

gado

Just running the standard = 2f, 4spd box & 4.11 gears.

Loses a little bit of punch in high range on the road but nothing to drastic and the rubber overdrive is great when you have to hall a bit of distance on the roads. As you can see in the video I dont have any trouble spinning them up in low range.

Cheers

Thanks mate!

Yet to see how mine will perform on 2F, 3-speed and 4.11

Cheers!

Matty Awful,

I enjoyed the video, thanks for posting the link.

OK, this may be a stupid question and defeating the point of such muddy fun but, have you or any of your mates tried running tire chains when running muddy trails like that?

The chains really chew the tracks up & are generally frowned upon so most people tend not to run them. The Pede's aren't a bad alternative though.

Great vids..simex tires are great..too bad not DOT USA...the roads looks also like the ones that we have in Puerto Rico on rainy season...cheers

Hi All:

"Matty," consider swapping-in a pair of 4.88 ratio third members. This will get the 2F back into its powerband; those 36 inch tires give a deep overdrive effect.

Regards,

Alan

Hi guys,

I'm Lawrence, the owner of the Mustard colour in the videos.

I just went back through the same tracks yesterday and had all of these experiences, in different areas of the tracks. The tracks were almost impassable now. That big bog hole is even bigger.

1) got stuck, a real diff scraper (both)
2) slipped off the track and winched back onto it
3) went full noise going up a section that we did the week before with 350 noise everywhere. 4000 revs and mud flying.

But had a great day. I'm trying to get some video of my car from that trip as well.

The tracks are like ones in Central America, lots of water at the moment and given the fires we had that have closed several key areas for 4wding, a lot of traffic is now going through fewer areas for the time being.

Anyway, thought I would say 'Hi' and catch you later.

Lawrence

I have never seen holes in a dirt road like that. Thanks for the videos.

I have thought about it, or even a set of reduction gears for the t-case from Marks adaptors but my plans include swapping a chev v8 into the 40 sometime in the next year or two. So I'm thinking I'll wait and see how it goes then. In the mean time the 2f is quite a grunty one & seems to get the job done.

Lawrence good to see you on Mud. Mate, if you get a chance you should post up an intro thread for that sweet 40 of yours so they can all check her out. They LOVE Cruiser porn on this site.

Cheers

Hi All:

"Matty," a Chevy V-8? Don't you mean a Holden V-8? ;)

Actually, if you do the V-8 swap the 4.11 diffs would be a better choice (but you might want some deeper gearing in the t-case.)

Regards,

Alan

I run a stroked 406 SBC with 36" Radial Iroks with 4.11 gears and the factory 3 spd. The ratio is great for most uses. I use my 40 for on and off road so I don't want extreeme low gearing. I can run 75 to 80 on the Interstate at around 2800 to 3000 rpms. Looking for a NV4500 in the future to swap in to lower rpms on the highway.
