This is one of my ideas for the black box. To keep things simple. Mount a reservoir on the back of the transfer case. I’m thinking around 2 quart capacity, so it’d be about 3 quarts total.

I’m leaning more towards this option just for simplicity but not sure how it would work. I would also put a temp sender in there with a gauge in the cab.

The other option would be remote res in the engine bay somewhere with a pump and an inline screen with a magnet. But with this the res would be above the black box. So the black box would be completely full of oil all the time. And I don’t really like that idea just because it might create a lot of pressure in the black box, maybe? Idk. I’d like to hear thoughts and opinions on these options. And if anyone has experience with this setup please chime in and tell me what you did and how its worked out for you.

There’s a detailed thread in the 80 series section about pumps/reservoirs/temps.
If you search blackbox it comes right up.

There’s a lot of good info in that thread. And verified my concern about keeping it completely full of oil all the time will create excess pressure in the BB. As of right now I’m going to do the tank underneath. No pump or cooler.

Thanks so much for keeping this updated over the years......helps keep us all motivated!

I can't imagine my entire neighborhood and my house burining 100% and having to start all over.......did you rebuild something similar? Where did you live after the fire!?

And I would have left the work truck behind in the fire and taken the cruiser!

Thank you, it’s definitely been hard to try to find the time to work on it. Sometimes I feel like the world is against me working on it. But I finally have that figured out. Friday and Saturday night after the family goes to bed I stay up until 12:30 to get some work done. And I’m still the first one up so I get a little time in the morning too.

After the fire we lived in a 5th wheel trailer behind my work while we rebuilt the house, the house is bigger and nicer but I would give it up in a second to have all of my stuff back. We lived in the trailer for 2 1/2 years. I never want to own one of those again!

I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and I had over $100,000 in tools in my truck at the time. If I had a trailer I absolutely would have taken it with me. I’m just so thankful it didn’t turn out like my Tacoma. Just some minor heat damage and the gash in the fender.
