There is a battle a wagin' on the home front...We are currently paying $700 a year through Allstate for a basic policy...comp., collision ect. on a '79 fj40. The wife says time for a cheaper truck... She says cheaper insurance is impossible to find cuz she checked...I say not true...(but of course I havent checked yet 8)) ..what is everyone else paying? I pay the mortgage she pays insurance so I never really knew how much it was. Is this price per year normal?? Or is it time to hunt down a better price. can't do anyhting about $2.50 a gallon...but thre has to be cheaper insurance from a decent company

I'm looking at my State Farm Bill for this month and here's what I pay per month:

All Vehicles have full coverage with 500 deductible and 7500 miles or less per year. Cruiser is valued at $5000 if totaled. I took 2 market value estimates from local dealers.

1997 Expedition $32.40
1968 FJ40 $14.35
2003 Mustang GT Convertible $64.63

I also have my home and cabin insured with State Farm and have been a customer since my first motorcycle in 1967.

No drivers under 25 and we have not had tickets in many years.

I think you are getting hosed by Allstate. I've shopped around and the big names like Geico and Allstate can't come close.

Liberty Mutual had very similar rates to SF but I have a local SF agent so I stuck with them.

Good Luck,
Paul

79 fj40, state farm
$460 a yr full coverage, just turned 25, single and one minor accident. This vehicle is listed as a secondary vehicle under 7500 miles a yr.

Thanks to all you guys for the info!! I knew there had to be another way!I will do some calling around. Our allstate agent said the best way was to disable the policy and if I wanted to drive it I had to call that day for coverage. what a PTA that would be. anyway...THANK you again for the info. I am a happy

I wish I lived south of the 49th! Here in socialist Canada I pay over $1000/yr on the secondary vehicle an an additional $1400+/yr for the one I use for work, and both are at the lowest possible rate!

I would suggest looking at your deductibles. Make them higher if you can afford too. Like 1000 on Collision and 500 on comp. That will knock the rate down. Also do you or any one on the policy have tickets, or accidents, DUI etc. that is one of the larger causes of paying more. 700 seems high. but we are all living in different areas of the country.

Do you have ALL of your policies with them? If not look into switching. Its called a multi line discount. Homeowners, auto, umbrella policy.

ALso if the Fj 40 is not worth in your opinion keeping Collision on Drop it all together.

Sorry if it Sounds like I work for an insurance company.

About $200 / year ... liability only on a '74 in NC. Perfect record and multi car discount with State Farm

1979 FJ-40
$207.84 in NC on a Nationwide multi-car policy. I've been with them since '68. I also note that it's classified as a "Pleasure" vehicle (well they got that right.... well.... most of the time) as opposed to my MOPAR DD which is classified as a "Drive To Work" vehicle. Don't know what diff that makes $$$-wise.
Unmarried, male, over 54yrs, never had a wreck or ticket.
That includes ACV collision and comprehensive.
That figure includes $2 on the premium for towing and labor, and $2 for damage to rented vehicles..... so figure ~$203 bottom line for us old NC cruiser geeks.
Actually, 'should be under $200 if I moved over one county. Rates vary here by county. My county (largest city in state) has kinda' high rates due to "rats in a cage" theory... or.... just call them impatient, selfish, idiots.

any car I own or buy is $350 a year for libiltiy, comp runs another $100, then collision is about $100 more. this is all except the 100 and 45, the 100 runs me $800 a year(all else is the same just the collision is higher) and they 45LV with an agreed value policy($30k) is $900 a year. I can change it to a collector car and it would be $250 a year, but 2500 miles a year limit, must be kept in locked garage.

I have ALL my insurabance thru the same company, so I get alot of discounts.

Up here in the Great White North I pay 600 CDN for the whole deal, 100 deductable. I guess it also helps to have it registered as a farm truck too :D

Purple Diesel....45 cents a litre :flipoff2:

Romer, I have Liberty as well. How did you get it that low? You have it under collectors or what? I have it around 500 a year but want it to be around 200 or less per year.

How much is the 40 worth? Are you sure it's economically `good' to have anything but liability on it? Usually anything under the $6-$7k range aint' worth it. Also, one of the first rules in insurance as a named insured, rasie your deductibles to as high as you can stand.

The truck is in really good shape...but you know how it goes. cold get 7k for it even though I have 10k in it. right now I have full coverage with $200 deductable so that is changing. I can see dropping all the fluff...if you wreck a fj40 how does it get fixed if it is freaking impossible to find parts in the first place?? I mean an insurance company isnt going to care how much $OR charges for parts to make fix something they value at $5,000 right?? I think it all started cuz the wife is mad they want more to cover my '79 than they do for her '04 Honda Pilot. :D

once again thanks to all for the info...

Damn Pimp...with that awesome stable of yours your insurance per year is probably more than the GNP of a small country! Sooo....If you wanna get rid of say...something in a mustard or a green... :D

I've got five vehicles insured through Geico for about $800 a year, liability only. My policy is no insurance on anything I can afford to lose. The way I see it the insurance company is making money off of you or they would go out of business. I don't get any more insurance than I legally have to have.

What province do you insure a 'Cruiser for under $1000 and with $100 deductible to boot? I'm at the lowest rate group possible with $500 deductible and no accidents for at least 10 years and probably longer (wouldn't make more than 5% difference anyway).
I'm at over 40% off the "Base" rate.
So much for public car insurance, I can't even shop around!

See if you can get your vehicle insured as an "antique". Under this title you are not supposed to drive it too much, but you can drive it when you like, pretty vague. On my FJ55, in california, my insurance is $62/year with the "antique" policy. Not too bad of a price.
