Kind of a dump question, but what year is my landcruiser

Well the title says it all, I think I have a '78 but I looked at the door plate last night (need a new voltage regulator) and the build date is Sept. '77, so when did it stop being a '77 and turn into a '78. the title and insurance say '78. Just a pondering thought.

Built on Sept. 77" then shipped to U.S. and not sold untill 78'. Then titled as a 78'. It is not uncommon, Mine was built in 66' then sold as a 67'.

Build Year vs Title

Not unusual to have a car built in the year previous and marketed as the next years model for when it is due to be sold. The frame number can be checked too on the RH side, outboard frame rail giving the build date also

The build date might be important for making sure you get the right parts if they switch something mid year but I would say you have a 78


The car model year tends to precede the actual calendar year with new models introduced late summer early fall when people are more likely to buy than mid winter

Oct 75 title as a 76. Has the disc brakes like the all 76s. Plus has Full time 4WD unlike most 76s

My 68 is a Oct 67 had almost all the 68 changes but still had the corse spline axles. That is why production date is so important. If you have a pre March of 1969 it isn't as important because Toyota decided to stop supporting those cruisers with parts information years ago.

You know I was well aware of that for 30 years. That would explain the diferent brake widths in i think 79 to 80,My ageing years did not clue in untill I rear this post . Thanks for the reminder.

We really need something added to the FAQ. This comes up far to often. You don't have to watch that much TV to see the ads in late summer with the car dealers try to sell off the current year models because the next year models are already coming out.

If I recall correctly, Toyota uses the September to September calendar. With the exception of 1975 and 1978 when they made major changes to the FJ40. The calendar for these years runs September of the previous year to December . Mine's a 12/78. When I order parts, I order parts for a '78.

I had a friend who had to wait until Jan 75 until he could get a 75 in CA. 78 was the same too.
