Started a frame off restoration on a 1975 fj40. I have young kids at home and I am worried about lead in the paint dust generated from body work. My plan is to have the body media blasted and sprayed with direct to metal or epoxy primer prior to starting the metal work to minimize the risk of heavy metal exposure. I only have a pop-up tarp garage to work in, so condensation and rust is a concern in the swampy DC climate. I have the tub off and found someone to blast it at a reasonable price (for dc), but can’t find someone to lay down primer at a reasonable price, not looking for a show car, just a weekend driver that I work on with (and pass on to the kids. Anyone know a paint shop or individual in the MD/VA area that could spray the primer once blasted or blast and prime? Looking to spend $500 or less for blast and prime, I can provide primer. Build thread to follow.

This is way sturdier than it’s oem counterpart. Looks like a real solid part.

It is …

I always try hard to over engineer And top the original Toyota OEM designs in any way I can and indeed do most of the time

This will never crumble like a stale potato chip ever again like the original
Thin ones always do and have done

Waiting for antique plates, I’ve been told that it could be months with covid delays. Realized I did not have a license plate holder. I approve of most of Toyotas design choices, I can’t say the license plate holder is one of them - maybe it looks better with Japanese plates? Anyway, I looked at the replicas from ccot - with the bracket, light sockets and lenses, the light covers, bulbs, etc. it was going to be around $200 just to hold a plate with aftermarket parts?! I picked this up on eBay for 100, has everything, even the bulbs work.

Disassembled and only broke a couple studs. Citrastrip and rustoleum rust dissolver took it to bare metal in a day. Welded up a hole and welded on new studs. Primed. Painting on a swing set is still kid-safe right?

Yeah, still in pa. Only moved a few miles.
look in to vintage registration.
Antique registration with an add on.
You find a plate(ebay or other).
Took me 15 minutes in Harrisburg.

I’ll probably do that. I saw that option at the dmv, but didn’t have the plate in hand. Where in pa are you?
lebanon, about an 1.5 hr west of you

Been a while, but getting back to it. Moved to a house without a garage - I’m going to build one, but for now I built a shed to hold the cruiser. My wife bought me a soft top with bows from Relik garage last year, I finally got around to installing it. The quality is questionable - very thin steel, lots of work to get it to fit, missing holes and captured nuts, sharp edges. But once I customized it to my tub, it works ok. I had the bows and such painted - my painter did not match the color right. Those parts will be going back for a re-spray.

Time to do something about the tuffy box the truck came with. Upon inspection looks like it’s way to wide to fit with stock seats- when I bought the truck it only had an aftermarket racing seat, driver side only, so the 8.5 inch wide tuffy fit fine. I could have bought a new 6.5inch for a few hundred dollars, but I spent all this time learning to weld (kind of) so I may as well use it. I cut the box down to 6.5 inches and finished the pad in some left over coral pleather I have to do the door cards.

For the door cards I used contact cement and a heat gun to adhere the coral fabric to the card. I used an appropriately sized wrench to shape the fabric and revive it into the grooves. Seams ok now, but I kind of doubt it will hold long term… I’m already looking for an upholsterer to do the whole thing in a slightly darker brown. That can wait though, looks ok for now. Did the cracked dash pad too - thinking I’m going to need a new black one though.
